🙂. Good poem Don and for once I guessed the punch line correctly.. No news is good news I reckon. If you were unfit to drive would have thought letter would come through pronto. 🤞🤞xxx
I have a problem with my eyes, (glaucoma) the test I took was a 'field test' looking for a loss of pixels in my view of life. It's a progressive thing so they only renew my driving license for one year now which expires on 7th Nov. Full marks for guessing my final lines, I'll have to up my game. 😂 xx
Took dvla 15 months to revoke my driving license following heart attack and pulmonary hypertension. I thought that I was keeping it as it took so long.
You will always be "Good old Uncle Don", license or not! Yes it would make a difference in your life, but worry about that IF that happens! With so many of us with everything crossed it's bound to go your way 😘 xx
i had an horrific drive home going west in afternoon in winter and up hill is not good . i just couldnt see so havent driven since , and life is not good. can no longer get to chester
where my social life was based . mainly in the chester u3a groups. so get messages from them and i talk to them., have joined the local geology group here but not as good as the othero ne and the other problemis geting ttaxis which cost a bomb. 2 miles is £ 8.50 and no doubt will now go up . my attendance allowance pay ment s f cover or that i suppose . havent got a cleaner yet either after last one stole my jewellery!charity does my shopping for me but he doesnt stop to talk and he is the only person who comes here each week . a.ll because i cannot drive ---or walk without a stick exc ept in house where I have got hand rails.
all because my eyes let me down . told optician and he didnt do field test but its not worth the risk .
too much traffic here all wanting to be there yesterday . schools galore so taxis never available at school run time and i have foubnd most of our taxi drivers come from abroad and go back home in the summer holiday period / turkish chap complained about the heat 40'c when he went home to turkery ! the arabians talk but the I ndians/ pakistanis dont . so I practice talking to them as it is better than talking to myself ! sorry about italics not intentional .
Sorry you're so stuck. I can still drive except after dark when my cataracts ensure I'm dazzled by approaching headlights. I'm afraid I'll be offered pulmonary rehab in the middle of winter when I'll have to get myself there and back with no taxis available. Like yours our taxis are all driven by new Britons, some of whom seem to have learnt to drive in Cairo, city of dodgy driving, blaring horns and frequent accidents. I'm afraid isolation comes to most of us.
Strewth! You’ve reminded me of what was like before I had my cataracts done. Approaching headlights were a nightmare. Now I prefer driving in the dark, headlights are a useful warning of approaching cars not a hazard.
I gave up driving in the dark after I was dazzled by an approaching 4x4 on a bend and was lucky the road was wide enough to keep me from going in the ditch. Round here you can only have a cataract operation on the NHS when you are virtually blind.
I can't drive at night - I have Age related wet macular vision and a cataract pretty new and I get dazzled even in no rain. Started when Blackpool had a working airport, came back from Malaga and it wash sheeting down the 33 miles home was horrific, I have never drove at night since,
I know you will count yourself lucky; my experience with cataract surgery is negative as I was given the wrong lens, thus imbalanced vision. Fast forward to April this year, had one contact lens to achieve a balanced vision. Then vision changed again; last week I was told that original cataract cells have grown over the original new lens, hence clouded vision. Only laser treatment can correct it!
Oh dear, compared to your experience I have been lucky up to now. Mind I did need laser treatment to removed film which grew over my lens. Two weeks to go before my driving licence expires. 🤞
Is it worth you phoning DVLA to find out? It may be worth trying. I put a reminder in my diary to follow up with you for the result. Sending blessings to you and with every good wish for a happy result.
Thanks YB, I think I’ll be patient and wait. I’ve just been reading a long article in the paper about how insurance companies are screwing poor old souls like myself with outrageous increases in premiums. I’m insured till June after which it will probably be cheaper to hire a chauffeur driven limousine to do my less than 500 annual mileage.
let`s hope that you keep your licence. I live in France so don`t have the problem with tests for old fogies. Result is that there are an awful lot of seriously disabled on the roads, eyesight, dementia, general old age illnesses. My wife stopped driving by choice 6 years ago so it is down to me, and I have to confess that long distances take a lot longer than they used to do. We don`t get up as early, getting ready takes longer and more breaks are required during the journey. But we get there eventually. Recent trip for a wedding in the Yorkshhire dales required 3 days, 2 days from south of France to UK, then a third days nightmare drive up the A1 on a friday. Where is everybody going to in England these days. As much traffic going north as going south.
I do wonder what we will do when I decide to stop, but hope that is a good few years away.
Take care, stay safe and enjoy your trips when you can. Chris.
Thanks Chris, that was a fair old trip you did to the wedding. That is the secret, take your time and concentrate more that you used to do. No radio on and passengers told to shut-up in my case. If I get my licence renewed I’ll probably take the Mature Drivers Assessment again to confirm I’m still safe.
it was a fair old trip. Home to the wedding 1,300 km or 800 miles. An expensive weekend when you add up diesel, ferry, hotels and toll costs in France, but worthwhile to see all the family. We usually go up to Southwell, where my sister lives, once a year, which is a bit less than Sheffield where family used to be. Nothing else planned unless my wife goes on a 3 week "cure" to improve breathing. We want to put that off until April so that we can take the caravan and I get 3 weeks holiday while she has 3 weeks workout. I`ll have to pay for myself, whereas her 3 week spell is paid for. Our health service might be much more expensive than UK, but benefits are very good. Chris.
I hope it arrives soon Don. I too have mine renewed every year now that i have narrow angles. I dont drive anymore but somehow didnt want to give up my license x
