Mystified and baffled.

New to this thought my breathlessness was to do with my heart after having a stent fitted 2yrs ago or even the meds in on.I had lung function tests in July results are now back as I can't get to see my g.p.yet does anyone know what these results mean. Hospital advise inhalers and rehab. Obstructive lung disease FVC1 as2.87. FEV1of 1.56litre in the ratio of 55%.Help.

Sorry unable to help as,I never ask for any figures. Was told 13yrs ago by my Consultant. We are all individuals and react differently. I was told that a gentleman who had just left consulting room in a wheelchair was on 24/7 oxygen had a much higher lung function than myself. But he absolutely did nothing to help himself and chose to give in , yet I didn't require oxygen and was walking everywhere .

My Consultant remarked I didnt look like my results were showing. He said its all in your attitude and determination. He used my case at a talk in a Seminar he attended for students. . I went along and answered questions the students were impressed

I take things a lot slower these days and when out walking take time to stop at intervals when need be. Its better than being in a wheelchair

I agree there are some that have to use a wheelchair etc but dont dwell on a bunch of figures

You know how you feel so make the most of if what you have. I am 79yrs young and recovering from a hospital stay but still get out and about slowly but surely

Ring the asthma UK helpline, they have really good nurses available who will take you through these readings.

They will also help you with what you should be asking your Gp.

I had three years of breathlessness that they thought was cardiac and turned out to be asthma.

Asthma is just another set of medicines and faffing about.

Rehab would be Pulmonary Rehabilitation course of approximately twice per week for six weeks. Its absolutely marvellous consists of approx one hour of gentle exercise to build lung stamina and one hour of learning about how you can improve. Don't worry about the exercise, it's very similar to that for heart patients. I'm sorry, I know nothing about the figures. They might be to do with COPD (emphysema or chronic bronchitis).

The figures would suggest that you have moderate COPD, but do contact the nurse helpline - they will be able to give you a far clearer assessment.

This I believe would indicate moderate/severe COPD

Lots of other numbers to consider, such as

FEV1/FVC percent

Forced vital capacity - FVC

Ring and ask if you want to know more, working out these numbers can drive you bonkers.

Mine was similar to Ern007 . Unfortunately, lung function tests aren’t carried out routinely, otherwise this sort of problem would be recognised earlier. Even though I have similarly poor lung function, the only significant symptom is constant lung mucous production from a condition called bronchiectasis; I have never wheezed and am rarely short of breath. If you had spirometry, then the test would have been able to detect any asthma component of the obstruction, which will be reversible with inhaler treatment.

Thank you for taking time out to reply.I don't have any mucus or wheezing just constantly out of breath.I had a spirometry test and said they couldn't be sure if it was asthma or copd. As yet I haven't been able to get a gp app but the receptionist said you don't need to see a gp you'll have to wait for a nurse to call y ou. I was wondering how much damage there is as I have moderate cad ,a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

As seems to be common with all ailments, different people have different symptoms even though they are technically suffering from the same thing. These various lung conditions can take time to clarify, and my experience suggests this is more of an art than a science (probably because of the variation in symptoms). What’s most important is that you get treatment which improves your symptoms, and you may have to have a few discussions with medical professionals before you get the treatment which suits you. But as my GP once said “asthma is big business” and there are scores of treatments available for lung conditions so, given time, you’ll probably find the right combination for you. Take care.

I had a heart bypass 9 years ago, but it didn't seem to affect my breathing. Bronchiectasis developed much more recently. The life style recommended for both is very similar. Good luck.
