According to news from my local paper live its been suggested that we do not need to shower daily by dermatologists which I am sure will please the local waterboard and those struggling with bill finances and most definitely for those of us who find this task exhausting due to health reasons.
For those struggling with arthritic pain , you might be glad to hear that research is being done into making knee and hip replacement ops possible on a day care basis for the fittest. Which might in time reduce the long waiting lists. Nice to hear some optimistic news for the future.

As an aside, I've always felt it unfair as a lone occupant of my home to pay £56 monthly DD to Severn Trent Water, the same as neighbouring families or 5. I've also thought it weird to wash hair daily & use all over shower gel, can't be good for the skin or the environment. Two of my kids have to shower setting so hot its unbearable, also weird imo, what a waste .
Hi peege I totally agree with you , I have just changed to a meter for my water . The waterboard know I have a visual impairment but suggest you read the meter yourself. It has reduced my bill to just under £16 per month. There is one for poorer families that is even less than that. It is a very unfair system . I use shower gel as I find it difficult to hold a bar of soap. Some people do set their water heat too high without a thought for cost . But hey that's life Thank you for reply , sorry for late response
Agreed - 2 of us in a 5 bedroom house. There is a water cost quiz on line which lets you know how much a meter would charge you for what you use. when working ours out it was we saved loads! stwater.co.uk/my-account/ap... You get 2 years to revert to having no meter if it is not for you! The example below is for 2 adults in a 5 bedroom house!
Thank you for the link should help others . I decided I needed to re budget and this looks like I can use the saving to pay for fuel costs but we will have to wait and see.
Thank you so much Katie and Digger my monthly DD is now £4.50 instead of over £56 because they've backdated DD as I'm now £183 in credit. Still, I'm thrilled so cheers and thanks again 🥂
Saturday just gone I had come back from an arts festival in Newport and it was late so I decided not to shower that evening and felt that it wouldn't do me any harm to miss it out!
Thanks for reply sassy59, just thought a change of topic might be useful to some of the members. I'm coping myself but some days are more fraught. Glad to hear you are OK and Pete , take care soon be time for injections again before winter sets in. Take care xx
I only shower every other day as I have very dry, exzema prone skin. Just a good wash on the other days. Lots of research suggests we shower and bathe far too much.
When you are young and active having a quick shower is an invigorating thing and a real delight. But the older you get the less enjoyable or necessary it becomes. My skin is now so thin that I don’t think it is capable of perspiring so would benefit more from moisturising. Ideally I need somewhere to take myself in for a service like I do my car. A bed bath followed by full moisturising. 😀
I fear my only option would be a not so pretty red light district nurse offering additional extras at an exorbitant price and I'm much too shy to go there! 😂
The ideas good though, and CDPO16 idea too . How's about settling for a mindfulness CD instead the music on them is very soothing and you can create your own dream of your favourite activity from days gone by. x
My son took the bathtub away and fitted a walk-in shower new sink pan floor walls light ect. I Was for ever falling getting in and out of the bath.. now with the shower AGHHHHH I CANT STAND THE RAINFALL it cuts short my puff, Maybe I need a snorkel Don OR BETTER STILL CDPO16s suggestion🥳 Party on Don 😁
Now that's a brilliant idea Don , I have a mobile hairdresser so how's about a mobile masseur,. Used to go to Physio where we used to massage each other. Now I have a massage bed instead but no one to apply moisturiser 😊
About 30 years ago because of skin and face and nose infection was sent to germinalogist who said because of my dry skin should only shower when necessary, he suggested that weekly was adequate except when absolutely necessary. Also said that use of flannel preferable. Jean
Now I would dispute flannels as I am sure they would carry all sorts of germs unless you change them every day . Even care workers are instructed to use two flannels for their clients. Surely these antiseptic wipes that we throw away are good enough these days. ????. One question how did our skin survive to date !!!!! Now this is getting serious I can't spray deodorant and never use soap on my face so I think we should do what is best for ourselves, the best idea being someone to bathe us 😀
Hi Katie, thank you for sharing this. Very interesting - as you say good for those of us that struggle to shower. A boy that lives in flat above mine has eczema and his mum was advised only to shower him every third day. And good news too about ops as day cases 👍🙂xxx
My daily shower went to weekly a while ago. I am having a visit from the occupational therapist about that today. I really can't lift my leg over the bath to have a shower so have been using a little step but nearly fell a couple of weeks ago and as I am waiting for hip op I will need something after. My rheumatoid arthritis is getting worse so will appreciate any help they can give me x
Good luck with the OT , much of their help is minimal as grants to change bathrooms take a long time to assess including financial assessments ect. I am still waiting for a formal decision of an outcome for changes to garden steps which has been in the pipeline for over 12 months . Have had informal verbal decision (No) due to health & safety regs. There are lots of gadgets to help with bathing these days even a seat that rises up & down and swivels so you don't have to climb into bath as such. But depends on the size of your bathroom.
Hope you can get some help and get a walk in shower they are more better for you in your circumstances and you Don't use so much water. I have a wet room but would really prefer a walk in shower. But it's OK for what I need. Hope it goes well. Brian
Good morning Katie. Hope your keeping as well as possible. I am with Severn trent and the bungalow had a water meter in when I moved in so guess I am stuck with it. My water bills are £25 a month direct debit. But they ask stupid questions like how often do you flush the loo. Obviously every time you go . And the water quality is not good and they have been pumping more raw sewage than ever into the rivers causing terrible problems. Brian
Hi Brian, that is another side of the water , how fresh is it ? You should be able to have your water charging checked as you are not the person who had the meter put in. Don't you think it should all be metered like other fuels so you only pay for what you use ?Plus a fair charge for supply costs. Some of the questions are a bit daft and require you to keep a diary to establish your use. Some people wash clothes every day & water gardens, others use water to clean car ect, some have pets that they shower regularly, paddling pools for kiddies. Appreciate your reply enjoy your day.
Yes there's a lot of anomalies with family sizes and paddling pools for kids etc. I find I fill the kettle ready for my morning cup of coffee before I go to bed. Because the 1st lot of water from the tap in a morning tastes different and regards the water meter they must have a way of reading it from outside Because I get a quartley bill telling me how much I have used and what my payments are for the next 3 months. Didn't know I had a water meter under the bathroom sink. Until they sent a letter asking if anyone was living here because of water usage. Hope your day goes well too
My water meter is under the kitchen sink have to use a large car repair light to see the clock on it but as you say they must be able to read it as they assessed my new monthly charge too. Said it gets reassessed after a year. As long as its cheaper I don't mind. Take Care
hi, if you lead a sedentary lifestyle of course there no need for a daily shower unless you sweat a lot. Showering daily means a change of clothes otherwise there’s no point…adding to the environmental and energy cost of laundry.
I’ve gone from not flushing for weewees and reducing showers to weekly for sometime now. Bill just gone from £33 to £20! I do indulge in the odd soak in a full bath which is luxurious but only with ‘ducking stool’ bath chair as my daughter calls it. My skin hasn’t suffered, I moisturised and use wipes. 🦊xx
I lived in rural Australia for many years and our only water supply was rainwater tanks that held the rain that fell on our roof. I would have three quick showers a week with a bit of a "top'n'tail" in between. I have good, healthy skin. I live in town now and have three infrared saunas a week followed by a warm and then cold shower, very invigorating. I use minimal chemicals on my skin. I find that many people are obsessive about having their daily shower. It just isn't necessary for healthy skin. As for body odour, unless you are doing heavy physical work or exercise, if you wear clean clothes you will not smell. I haven't used deodorant for many years and my husband never has. The use of these products has been promoted to sell products but not necessary for health or comfort.
That's an interesting reply, my son lives in Australia hes in the Australian Army. Some people who have allergies can't use soap let alone these deodorants that are constantly being advertised as if they are an absolute necessity. Some people actually have two showers a day. I recall when my children were young we used to bath all three in one tub after I had had a bath because of the amount of fuel to heat a bath of water. I have a walk in shower now and do not use it everyday. We even used to use the bath water to water the garden which was a two man job , people do seem to take water for granted and its not as expensive as many other items . I'm sure our skin will survive without all these skin lotions too except sun oil . But even sun oil can be any cream that stops your skin from burning my mum use to use nivea or cover your skin or stay indoors when its too hot. Enjoy your saunas ect have a nice day.
Very interesting reading! I had excema as a child and wasn't allowed to play in water 😜 I reckon that's where my aversion to water arose. We're on a water meter, hidden underground somewhere on the front and we pay Anglian water £11.00 a month. Our shower is pathetic water force and I'm waiting for the OT to visit, she said I'm 42nd in the queue 😂.
We share a bath twice a week then sink washes in-between. Our kids were brought up sharing the bath water, I don't see a problem with it.
Cave man didn't have Nivea 🤣.. I have No7 oil free water surge gel and a flannel, I say no to wet wipes, we've become a disposable throw away generation. But is it my age? Was I as careable about the environment in my 20's, I don't think I was, too busy living life lol
Well Zand60, guess we didn't think about the environment in our twenties but its apparent now we maybe should have. Your water bill sounds good and no meters to read, but your OT queue number sounds about average. Mine comes in her dinner hour if necessary. I don't bother them as I know they are bogged down. My kids don't have any problems due to sharing baths but maybe a few from sharing laptops ect for too long. But they are way into their 50s now with no major health issues due to old habits . True cave men did not have Nivea (smiles) but they did not live to ripe old ages and no one to tell them what to do either !!! I don't sit out in the sun but I am about to have my second skin cancer removed in my life time. Life is a strange thing but enjoy while you can. I did not go out in the virus pandemic but still caught it to spite injections. So enjoy life while you can and do what you feel is best for you.
