Attended our local breathing support group today and one of our members produced a salt pipe which she says has considerably helped her COPD. I wondered whether anyone in the forum or BLF have had any experience or knowledge of this?
Cheers

Thanks - they have a web site with a fair amount of information, was really wondering if inhaling salt at all was a good or bad thing, so interested to hear that saline is given through nebuliser so food for thought!

The salt helps drive mosture into your lungs to clear mucus .. Drinking a lot will help clear mucus
Thanking you both for replies - good to get other opinions - thinking I may not bother as I fall into the category of 'try it once, don't like it, wasted precious pennies' !
I have also used one but cant say it's made any difference. If you want to find out more put salt pipe in the search box and you will find more blogs about it.
Thanks Syl have actually just been doing that - seems 50/50 with a lot of comments from people with asthma or sinus problems, neither of which I have. On balance, not going to bother !
Nothing to do with salt pipes exactly but I live on the east coast and visit the south coast every few weeks. My breathing is better down the south coast. My doc says this is because the east coast salt air is damp and cold whereas the south coast air is warm and drier. I have tried a salt pipe and I haven't formed an opinion yet. Perhaps I didn't use it long enough.
Hi Puff - live on the south coast and have to agree the air is drier and warmer and count myself really lucky, however a hotter and sunnier climate would be much preferable! Hey ho, dreams are good, eh?
I visit Selsey. which juts out into the sea and sometimes is the warmest place on the south coast. I can't stand it being too hot though. It makes me want to laze about all day !
I live just outside Bournemouth and should visit the beach but unfortunately most access is very steep - problem in itself! Love the heat, but not humid heat probably because I was born warm in Cyprus or I was designated to be a hiberenating critter!
This has been raised several times if you follow the link you will see all the relevant questions & replies. I have used one & found it did help me clear mucus together with chest clearing exercises.
Thanks jojam, if I had half a brain I would have done a search first - doh! But taken a look now and am armed with various opinions to help make a decision.
Hi I used a salt pipe-is it the one you put the salt crystals in the bottom? To be honest it sounded good but I didnt find it beneficial at all. Ive got Bronchiectasis and asthma.
Thanks suspan - great to get different reactions - I looked at one that had the crystals already in and lasts for five years. Smiling now
You would think it should do some good. Saline etc. I am wondering if it is perseverance before results appears. Get mine out of the drawer because I feel cheesed off with another chest infection. Since I have paid for it - give it a proper chance.
Hi annie80- my eyeballs are sore now with trawling through numerous posts on here and the wider internet! I think you have hit the nail on the head, perseverance is the key element as with most things - we may not have our full range of activity levels but we sure as heck have the perservance angle in buckets!
Sorry to hear you have another chest infection - keep well and best wishes.
Just as a side bar, a lovely fellow member of my PR group recommended using an antibacterial hand serum (I use Cuticura which lasts for 8 hours) before going out anywhere to cut down the risk of catching unwanted 'bugs'. It sounds silly but I put a liberal amount not only on my hands but around my mouth, nose and inside the nose and have to report that since religiously (perseverance rules!) using it since November I have not had one chest infection ! That despite my son having had two major colds and an assistant in Sainsbury's sneezing all over me.
Take care,
Lesley x
Feel a little better now but need to summon up the energy to have a bath! Not sure how a lot of use with Cuticura on the facial skin. Good idea but would constant use be good for the skin. I have used it on my hands or similar and think it may contain some sort of alcohol.
I am wondering what triggers a bug to cause a chest infection??!!
My theory (I have been accused of thinking somewhat laterally) on the facial skin, particularly around the nose is that when incoming viruseseses (deliberate mistake) attempt to invade the lungs, my super doopa antibacterial stuff is there to hold them at bay!
As far as the drying out the skin bit, mine is beyond repair! But I do contribute to the coffers of beauty companies by trowelling on moisturizer first and then the antibacterial layer.
Glad you feel a little better, even though having a bath is difficult, one does tend to feel better for it.
Lesley
I had a bath and felt better for it. Then I made the mistake of changing the duvet - that was a lay on the bed job to sort myself out.
talking about germs and bugs, I wonder how many gather on our pillows. I am going to do a question on that.
Hello Lesley, yes i have been using the salitair salt pipe and it has assisted me with my breathing, i use it first thing n the morning when i wake up and last thing at night before bed, if i feel my chest a bit heavy i use it as well, give it a try
