Pain in lung spaces????

I suffer from COPD and Athsma, today i was watching tv, waiting for my lunch to cook when i had pain at the bottom of my ribcage, it was more of a cramping pain, it got so bad so suddenly, that i screamed. Does anybody else with that, or is it just me. My late dad said he used to get cramps in his sides (and he had a very bad bronchial history). Just wondering if other people suffer with it. Its so painful, so suddenly, that i truly believe that no one can do anything, til it dissipates itself a few mins or an hour later!

Is it just on one side or both x

Could it be a muscular spasm rather than your lungs? I get similar in my back. xx

Hi. I developed this condition in 2018 and have been plagued with chronic pain since. Scans showed I have soft tissue damage there which effects the muscle below the rib cage and the right side of my body. I've been on strong painkillers since. The pain is horrible and cuts my mobility since it's worse when I walk. I'm told theres no cure but to concentrate on pain relief. It's such a painful misery. Good luck to you.

I get the same sudden cramping pain at the base of my rib cage (mostly left), especially when I do a sharp turn or in bed when I turn. mine goes away after straighten-up. I don't know if that could be related to Asthma and COPD, which I have also.

I think you need to talk to your doctor.

I get sore ribs when I forget to take my reliever inhaler before I do something strenuous. I saw my GP to check that this was what it was.

The little muscles between the ribs can become stretched and sore and can cramp up. The pain can be eased by massaging the sore muscles using your fingertips in a rotating movement.

Yes i do that, and then i feel alright, only to have it cramp again 2 mins later. Ack, these pains!

I wonder if an anti inflammatory rub may help you it would be worth a try you can get some at boots or ask your GP what his thoughts are.

Hope you get it sorted. O thing worse than dibilitating pain.

Yes I do too. Not often but when I do it's like someone has stabbed me and I invariably yell, I just can't help it. Also been hospitalized with a condition that affects the cartilage between the ribs. Pain was undescribable. Just need to remember not to twist my body too quickly

I to now get this same thing. Mine started straight after been given Ciprofoxacin, this antibiotic went on to destroy my my entire muscle skeletal function . Has anyone had this.?

I also have this intermittently but can be anywhere in the rib cage front & back. A paramedic said it was costachondritis - an inflamation of the space between the ribs. He repeorted to my GP who was not interested. A physio gave me some stretch exercises which can help but best to see doctor first or maybe discuss with your RESPS team. Good Luck. You're right it is a very sharp pain initially that makes you want to scream - quite frightening but if it is this it is not dangerous

When I first read your post I thought exactly as siouxbecket and wondered about costachondritis. However as with any new symptoms I suggest you speak to a medic.

I get this now & again, I thought I had a hernia. Doc says it is possibly Tietze syndrome is a rare musculoskeletal disease that can be painful but is almost never serious. It happens when the cartilage around the joints connecting your upper ribs to your breastbone swells up. Usually the second or third ribs are most affected. No one knows exactly what causes Tietze syndrome.

Hi valgal76

Pain can be a red flag and should not be ignored. As the other members have advised, it would be best to contact your GP to let them know what is happening and get things checked out, just to be on the safe side and put your mind at rest.

Take care
