Last Friday I spoke to our respiratory nurse and explained I'd been fighting for breath and had used my SOS antibiotics. She told me to take the SOS Prednisilone as well.
I did so but immediately my diabetic bloods shot up to 10.5 and have remained at that level since (for years, they've been between 4.5 and 6. ). I surely can't accept that sort of risk?

It is 100% known that prednisone increases blood sugars. If you are having a short course to get rid of an infection then there is no reason to worry. It’s a shame you weren’t informed about this by the nurse. Try to reduce carbohydrates whilst on tablets but even that isn’t so crucial with a short course. You clearly are in control of your diabetes so should be fine. I have been on longer courses of steroids and still have good blood sugars overall.
IF you ever need to take steroids for a long period doctors may consider altering your diabetes medication for the duration but won’t for a short time.
As others say no worries with steroids and blood glucose. When you come off steroids all returns to normal. My diabetic nurse says the prednisone can save your life so you have to out way the risks. My glucose levels have always gone back to normal when I've come off prednisone
Oooh yes steroids will increase blood sugar levels. Steroids tend to cause insulin resistance in the blood cells and not helped by increasing the appetite at the same time!
Blood sugar levels should return to normal when the course of steroids is finished and I tend to really watch my diet whilst taking the steroids!
