Timothy Winters(Charles Causley – 1917 to 2003) Timothy Winters comes to schoolWith eyes as wide as a football pool,Ears like bombs and teeth like splinters:A blitz of a boy is Timothy Winters. His belly is white, his neck is dark,And his hair is an exclamation mark. His clothes are enough to scare a crowAnd through his britches the blue winds blow. When teacher talks he won’t hear a wordAnd shoots down dead the arithmetic-bird,He licks the pattern off his plateAnd he’s not even heard of the Welfare State. Timothy Winters has bloody feetAnd he lives in a house on Suez Street,He sleeps in a sack on the kitchen floorAnd they say there aren’t boys like him any more. Old man Winters likes his beerAnd his missus ran off with a bombardier,Grandma sits in the grate with a ginAnd Timothy’s dosed with an aspirin. The Welfare Worker lies awakeBut the law’s as tricky as a ten-foot snake,So Timothy Winters drinks his cupAnd slowly goes on growing up. At morning prayers the Headmaster helvesFor children less fortunate than ourselves,And the loudest response in the room is whenTimothy Winters roars ‘Amen!’ So come one angel, come on ten:Timothy Winters says ‘Amen’Amen amen amen amen.Timothy Winters, Lord.

I have a book of Charles Causley poems somewhere. I must find it. Thank you for that Iris.
Wishing you and your family a happy Easter. Thinking of you. Xxx🐣🐣❤️
he is a good poet. I am not too good lately, no energy, loads of phlegm, so lonely without Tony. Love Iris x
Bless you Iris, you must miss Tony everyday. I just hope you feel a little better soon.
Hugs, Carole xxx💕🤗
I’m not familiar with that interesting poem, thank you. Hope you’re ok, have happy Easter. I’m enjoying sunshine, hope you are. Jean xx
Charles Causley must have had a vivid imagination and quite a zest for life. The verses jump out at you and the whole thing rattles along like a rickety train set.it is such fun to say it out loud.I'm sorry to hear you are not so good. Of course you must miss Tony terribly. I'd like to think Tony is not so far away from you. And i hope that warmer weather brings an upturn in your health. Your poems are always welcome Iris. So thanks for all the contributions. ❤️
thanks for your kind comments. Feel a bit better today, still trying to ignore my dusty furniture! Lovely sunny morning here, might try a walk around the garden with my stick. LoveIrisx
Another one that I'd clean forgotten I ever knew. Thanks Lyd. xx
Thankfully those days are behind us Iris, although it wasn't that long ago that people grew up like this. Sorry to hear you are not good and hope the sunshine will lift you a little x
A favourite poem. So pleased that you, and I see others, like Causley.
One of my favourites too Iris Thanks for posting. I hope the warmer weather brings a positive change to your health. I’m sure Tony is watching over you 🤗🤗🤗🤗
That's a lovely poem. Still so relevant, sadly. Best wishes for Easter, Iris. Hope the better weather will bring you better health.
Your'e right I'm sure Iris, that yours and your lovely Tony's nature has rubbed off on your sons. They sound so kind and caring.
I hope you get to sit in the garden for a bit this weekend. Lots of Easter love to you ❤ 💕💐
