Good morning. I have had lung reduction surgery on both lungs at Barts in 2018 and 2019I would certainly recommend the operation if offered. Barts is a great team. I don't know who your surgeon is but I have benefitted greatly from these procedures
Hi 49dibs can I ask were you very active before your lung volume reduction surgery , and you mentioned benefited greatly ,did that take long to notice . Is the benefit still as good now.? Thanks Mike
I had difficulties walking for more than 10 minutes before the op. I struggled to climb even small hills and was generally breathless.I noticed an improvement within weeks and still feel much more able to walk further, take inclines and generally more positive day to day
I had no issues with the anaesthetics although the drains were painful to be removed. I was out of bed within 2 days and encouraged to walk walk walk
I don't know who Yr consultant is at Barts but if its David Waller you will be on great hands
I had lung reduction surgery in October 2018 at The Royal Brompton Hospital in London . Take your time in recovery . I got over it very quickly and it was a revelation as to how my condition was so much better . Its not a cure but it surely helps . I had an upper left lobectomy and I wish I could have the other lung done but I've been told it's not an option. I hope everything goes well for you . Oh by the way I was 70 years old when I had it done . Hope this helps you .
Hi hope this finds you well . I'm due to have LVRS surgery on a large bullae this spring which I deferred in 2017. Can I ask you how before the surgery you were . IE were you able to walk fair and were you on oxygen. Did it take long to the recovery from the surgery & was there any problems with the annaes thetic & drains. I'm still able to walk slowly fair distances but get very tight chested at times so it's a case of weighing benefits against risk..Many thanks for any reply Mike
Sorry I forgot to mention no problem with the anaesthetic or the drains . In high dependency unit for 3 days then back on normal ward . Then you start physiotherapy .Good luck .
Hi my LVRS in oct 2018 went very well . Before the op I couldn't walk very far and I had ambulatory oxygen. I'm a fighter and my recovery was quite quick according to my surgeon . I basically was almost back to normal at 5 weeks past op . I fared very well after and wish I'd had it done sooner ..............but now I'm not good . I've moved from down south to up north and I'm afraid the cold up here is not good for me. I spent Christmas in hospital with respiratory failure due to a very nasty chest infection and I'm on oxygen fir 16 hours a day plus bottles for ambulatory use . I would still have the op knowing how I am now. Good luck and remember everyone is different . Bedt wishes Babs
Oh so sorry to hear your condition got worse when you relocated up north . if it is mainly due to the weather there could you not move back down this way (south) and see if there is an improvement .and please stay warm thats the important thing .thanks again for the info on LVRS ,take care
