Hi all I am a returning member to healthunlocked & would like some advice please.I have had copd since 2004/5 & managed it well. Except for the dreaded 'flare ups' & having to take the 'Rescue Pk' of steroids & anti/bi it hasn't really limited me.
So, other than my daily inhaler (and rescue pk as & when) I've never had to take any other med. The strongest tablet I will take is a paracetamol.
Couple wks ago I was sent for an ECG as my heart rate (Tackycardic they say it's called) was 109 my BP isn't high. Bisoprolol (Beta Blocker) has been offered to me.
I've been trying to educate myself
about this condition & I've started to come to the conclusion I have no choice but to take this med...well perhaps I have but not a safe one lol...
Please, if you have this condition & any advice about the med offered could you let me know. I've heard once started you don't come of this kind of medication. Yet, I read that an 'irregular' heartbeat can right itself?
I remembered I was a member of this site & thought, nowhere better to ask for any info on Tachycardia.
Thank you. 🤞👍

I have been taking bisoprolol since 2012. I had tachycardia, AF and dilated cardiomyopathy diagnosed. The bisoprolol brought down the heart rate. Other drugs helped to keep my heart pumping and in 2021 I had a pacemaker which now regulates my heart beat. When I very first took bisop I was quite tired and sleepy but my body quickly got used to it. I have 5mg daily. I hope that if you decide to take it you find it helpful.
Thank you very much for your reply. Excuse my ignorance & if you don't mind me asking (instead of web search) what is the difference between those 3 diagnosis?
I have had bronch for 68 years and so have aquired a lot of knowledge over the years. Like you, I had a lot to learn about the heart when I was diagnosed and I am still learning!
Sometimes Littlepom I think to much info can give u sleepless nite's 🙄 I should count myself lucky (& I do) I've only just started with this heart problem. Won't stop me jiving about to all 60's music. 😄Seriously though It's the sudden shock of having to take tablets & the need to find out from those that know & understand better than me about this tab.
you certainly mustn’t stop jiving about! It is a shock to get these medical terms and drugs thrown at us and I’m afraid that most medics are not good at the way that they tell you. It is really just a case that the meds are there to control your condition so that you can go on living your best life. Although I have AF and cardiomyopathy the bisoprolol stopped the rapid heartbeat and I haven’t had it since Istarted them. Taking your little pill will soon become part of your day as it is for so many people. I hope that it doesn’t take too longfor you to get over the shock and to feel better. You know that we are all here to support you.
I keep so much to myself & I know I shouldn't! I've spoken (or written I should say lol) more on here then I have mentioned to anyone near me. So, you will never know just how much ur posts, information & helpful kind words have helped me. Thank you. 🤗
Hi, I have also had COPD for 20 years, although take the ‘ kitchen sink full’ of medication plus rescue meds when needed.
A few years ago I developed a sinus tachycardia, probably due to a bad spell when I needed lots of salbutamol inhaler and nebs, which shot my heart rate up sky high. All the health care professionals got very excited although the Consultant at the time said not to worry about it and indeed it has settled down.
Assume you have been diagnosed with a different tachycardia ? Have you had the opportunity to discuss medication with your surgery pharmacist at all ? In my experience they bloomin marvellous and can help by discussing details of medication.
Hi Pauline ty for ur reply & helpful advice. You have me thinking? (hard at times lol 😊) I had a real bad flare up start of Jan & more or less started to feel better when I started to get pain in my chest. I thought I'd strained myself with coughing. But, after a wk & it wasn't easing I presented myself at Dr. Had ECG nx day & following day he rang with results. My BP has never been high & wasn't then but Dr explained on phone that my heart rate was 109 & suggested this med Bisoprolol. I told him I'd think about it. I just couldn't understand what had happened to my heart to need this med. I had more questions than answers when he went of phone On my patient access online I could see ECG results & comments, it is same as yours Sinus Tachycardia. That was over 2 wks ago. I've been asking friends searching internet (didn't think I'd get an appt with a Dr to ask the questions I had). Then I remembered I was a member of Healthunlocked from years ago & just knew I get some answers.
I will certainly do as u suggest & see my pharmacist I'll make an appt. I took a snap shot of my ECG results & Dr comments so I can show him. Thank you again..👍
Thanks for your response. Did you need lots of salbutamol during your recent flare up ? Because I am sure that would do it.
At the time of my Sinus Tachycardia I had quite a few ECG’s though they didn’t really show anything much. I wasn’t offered any medication for it.
No one would let me exercise until I had seen the respiratory consultant who told me to carry on and exercise because the benefits of the exercise would be more beneficial than not. That was about 6/7 years ago.
Even now when I am exercising my heart rate is around 125/130 but it soon settles back down to 77-90 at rest.
Pauline I only had the one ECG & offered Bisoprolol in a tel call from Dr nx day. I was so shocked & really didn't have time to think or form the questions that came into my head later. He never said I couldn't excerise so I carry on with it. As u will know with a flare up of copd it's the coughing that's the strain on the body in trying to get the 'froth' up. (I always liking my lungs to a 'froth making machine') 🙄
I don't think I over used my blue inhaler but of course it was used more than normal. Normally I only use once a day!
I've started the Bisoprolol now so will update how I get on with it.
The pharmacist said they would phone me towards the end of nx wk to see how I'm getting on with this new med. That will give me a chance to ask a few more questions. And, of course I will let u & the others who gave me the helpful advice I received. Catch u all soon thanks to you all I feel much better than I did. 👍🤗
I have been taking Bisoprolol since 2014, when I had a heart attack, to keep my blood pressure down (in theory). I don't have any side effects. Last September I had a bad bout of Atrial Fibrillation and was sent for various tests. The stress which caused the problem has gone and so has the heart flutter. I don't know but I hope Tachycardia is the same. xxx
Hi Albert ty so much for ur reply. I've lived with a lot of stress for 4 years & I know for sure Albert it's what's caused this. I've tried everything to try & de-stress as I knew it wasn't good for me, but??? I do yoga once a wk, for years gone once a wk to circuit training 'heart & lung' class & tried to watch my diet but??? I started mindfulness last year on utube which is very relaxing & do it ey morning & nite. I'm a gr8 believer in helping yourself, anything rather than medication. But, it looks like I need this bisoprolol now! Have started it today but it has upset me. 🙏
I hope that your body will get used to it, but there must be other medicines which will do the same job. Good luck with countering the stress- not very easy but we have to try. Best wishes. xxx
Hi - hope you are all keeping well. I'm just about coming to end of first month's prescription Bisoprolol. No one rang to see how I was getting on with it but except for feeling tired & little motivation I haven't had any other problems.
Thought I would let you know & for others to see for reference.
