I can't take it. It made me feel sick.

Sorry to hear that littlepom, how long did you try it for? I'm wondering if my mum should give it a few days?

in reply toCatlover36

I can't really answer that. I have had bronch all of my life and have tried it several times. Always with the same result. I nebulise salbutamol and isotonic saline instead and that turns the mucus to liquid so that I can get rid of it

I was first prescribed it many years ago, 2x3 per day. I reacted badly so reduced them to 2 a day for a week or two gradually increasing to 6 a day and by that time they were working well without side effects.

Thanks Don, that's really helpful information, did you get the bad reaction the first day of taking them do you remember? My mother is 98 so we don't want her poorly as you can imagine

I honestly can’t remember how bad the first reaction was now, but it can’t have been too bad or I wouldn’t have carried on with them. I was convinced that it was the sudden introduction of such a powerful drug was enough to upset anyone’s body.

I don't think I had any problems, but as I was in hospital with the dreaded C at the time I'm not sure. I have it 3 times a day. Maybe reduce the sachets to once or twice a day as a start. Was your mum on any strong AB's at the same time, as they sometimes upset my tum.

Thanks Digger, no antibiotics but she's cut them down now & we're keeping our fingers crossed. Thanks for replying

I was given this whilst in hospital post lobectomy. They played havoc with my digestive system along with the antibiotics although I was taking morphine at the time which tends to cause constipation. I discussed it with my GP and she told me to stop taking them. They also made me nauseous.

It’s a notified side effect of this drug.

Hi , I used to take 4 tablets a day for over 10 years and they gave me loose stools or Diarrhoea and made going out a nightmare.

Then 10 months ago I mentioned it to my consultant , he said yes that’s a side effect , you should stop taking them . My life has now changed like I can’t tell you , these innocent looking little devils are definitely not for me .

Hope this helps ❤️

I have Bronchiectasis and am on carbocistein (2 three times a day) and they do upset my stomach but I take probiotic tablets (from Boots). They really help calm things down plus I think my body seemed to get adjusted to them. They help me so much with clearing mucus, which in turn helps keep infections down, that I find it worthwhile. I hope your mum can get used to them and they benefit her 🤞🙂xxx

Hi Catlover. I have taken these 2 capsules twice daily for 2 years. I initially had diarrhoea and cut down to a single capsule for 2 weeks. I then worked back up to 2 capsules and felt an improvement. Please discuss cutting the doseage down with your GP . Hope it works with your mother. Carbosistiene really helps to remove lung debris and everything else ;)

I have been taking it for several years with no side effects at all. I was warned that the maximum dose is 2x2 per day as more can produce side effects.

Hi there, I'm currently taking 375mg x 6 daily for the past 12 months and I can honestly say it does nothing for me at all! No side effects, but no benefit either. After discussion with my consultant, I'm weaning myself off them.

I've taken it since June last year. No side effects and it's brilliant. Keeps getting rid of all my lung blocking nasties. I'm 84.

I was prescribed 4 per day a month ago and have had no stomach issues, but I do take a daily probiotic as I also have ulcerative colitis so maybe this helps. I find they have certainly helped me to clear my lungs.

Hi Catlover - I tried them at one point some years ago. They did thin the mucus but made me choke and be breathless. Perhaps because I have always found it easier to cough up thicker mucus and I reacted badly to it being thinner which is what happens with my asthma. So that was it! I don't remember having diarrhea though. I hope it works for your mother.

hi , I was on carbocysteine for 4 months and it gradually poisoned . Had every side effect you can imagine but was slowly getting worse me affected my bladder too .

Eventually my tongue became so swollen I was choking and I stopped and all symptoms stopped too ..

have long Covid and recently diagnosed with bronchiectasis which I’ve probably had for decades .only a ct scan confirmed this . Can’t take statins and other drugs too

I had a similar reaction and I've tried redused dosage over the years with little relief. However, since my dose of Covid two weeks ago I have found I can tolerate them better.

I put this down to the only change to my diet which was to switch from loaf bread to pitta.

I can't think of anything else.

Hi CatloverI have been on carbocistein for about 8 months and l have upset stomach loose stools and diaareah I'm not sure it's all down to carbocistein in the last 10 months l had covid twice and food poison l suffer from Asthma and bronchiectasis and was admitted to hospital with breathing problems. I would contact the GP or Consultants Secretary they may change the dose or time when to take carbocistein especially with your mother being elderly. Hope this helps
