Allergies

hello all. I know it’s been a while since I first posted.

I wanted to share and see if others have similar issues off the back of their Asthma. So recently and throughout the year I suffer with various allergies, as I’m sure a lot of you do. The latest one is having extremely itchy eyes which prescribed eye drops do not seem to really help. Also combined with persistent sneezes for a few minutes. Yet I do not have a cold as I can be fine during different hours of the day.

I regularly take antihistamine plus am on spriva and relvar inhalers.

I am seeing my local practice nurse soon so will speak about the exacerbated allergies.

just to add my partner kindly mopped the floor this week worn zoflora and hot water, upon my return home the scent was so strong (think he used about 1/3rd bottle !) I was sneezing and uncomfortable for at least a day.

any thoughts peeps

Hope you’re all managing and staying well.

kind regards

Sam x

Hi Pantha

Like many I also have a lot of allergies. I now take double dose Loratadine on the advice of my consultant. Perhaps this is something you could discuss with your asthma nurse. (The consultant said I could double up the Loratadine or add in a different antihistamine.)

hi Pantha44

I had red itchy eyes, e we With both eyelids stuck together after a nights sleep. I have been treated for red eye and dry eye in the past, to no avail.

Recently the doctor prescribed Hylo Forte, and my eyes appear to b back to normal.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pantha44 - Ive had allergic asthma since my early 20s (along with later dx for copd and bronchiectasis). When my blood sugar went up over a year ago so that I was in the prediabetic range, I decided to give up all sugar - biscuits, cake, pastries, sugar in drinks, the lot - and strangely and unexpectedly the grass pollen allergy I had had every year since the original asthma dx vanished. The grass pollen season came and went and instead of upping my asthma medication as usual, I was actually able to reduce it. (I also stopped having athletes foot between my toes for first time since I could remember.)

Its a big decision to give up everything with sugar in it - I was motivated by not wanting the prediabetes to develop into full on diabetes so that I would have to take yet more medication. Even if you wanted to try this, it might not work for you - we are all different - but grass pollen rendered my life dreadful for so many years, so that I couldnt go outside at all, and stopping sugar has totally changed that. So I thought I would let you know. (Blood sugar still just as high though!)

I do have periods every so often of sneezing up to 15 times but it doesnt really bother me - I quite enjoy annoying my partner with it :)) All the best to you.

ahh thank you for your input. Sugar is a very addictive bad part of our diet in general and definitely worth considering. Much appreciated

My optician recommended Hyabak solution for my dry and itchy eyes. I also get blepharitis and have to wash my eyelids quite carefully to remove any encrustations.

Sounds like you have allergies to household cleaners as i do. ive always sneezed and had nose problems i have allergic rhinitis. I have sinus problems too. Im awaiting ENT appointment. Im asthmatic all my life and 10/10 allergic to dogs, dust mites, cats etc. I was given a muscle relaxant for a knee op and had severe anaphalaxis and stopped breathing. Never in my life have i had anything like that to a medication. They had to save my life and put me on a breathing machine. Luckily as my anethsetist was 30 years in the job i was told i wouldnt be here i was 49 when it happened. Im so wary now what im given. Didnt get my operation that day. Had to have another time. I now suffer anxiety as a result.

I hope they can sort something out for you. Its awful living with allergies. I take 2 antihistamines a day plus 13 other meds too. Im on Fostaire 200 so highest dose they can give. Fingers crossed for you. Xxxx

Been struggling with symptons similar to you. Process of elimination caused us to completely strip our bed and put washing machine on normal cycle LESS our usual bio liquid. On the rinse cycle there was plenty of soapy water clearly visible. Have now changed to a non bio pod and wash cycle now includes an extra rinse. So far so good.

Hi Sam, I have multiple allergies, asthma and Bronch. I take antihistamine all year round because of allergic rhinitis but I still found, in the past, that any overwhelming smells caused me at least a day of sneezing, so I gradually got rid of anything that has an overpowering scent. I use plants to clear the air in all rooms, I use Eco friendly washing egg etc. and all surfaces are wet dusted. I also suffer from dust mite so all bedding has to be changed weekly and washed at 60 degrees. With all these things in place I find my allergies are under control. I hope these ideas help you. Take care, Maximonkey

Hi. I have allergic asthma, rhinitis and hives. Apart from asthma medications, the only antihistamine which has ever worked is fexofenadine. I hope that’s the one you’re on! For years the gp fobbed me off with OTC ones, but since the Brompton gave me fexo I’ve been better. 180mg works for me but if necessary you can increase

Thank you. Can I ask does it help with itchy allergic eyes also ? As well as hay fever, dust etc

eleanordigby profile image
eleanordigby in reply to Pantha44

yes, all those! Luckily I only get itchy eyes in summer (grass & tree pollen) but the rest is year-round. if you don’t have hives as well you might get given the 120mg dose, but if you do, the standard dose is 180mg. It’s the only antihistamine that’s ever given me any relief
