As a result of information here I was able to turn a referral to a local Consultant to a one to a hospital where I wished to go.
My lungs are now playing up badly and I have been given a "referral to a Clinic [respiratory]". That hospital specialises in geriatrics and I'd rather go somewhere with a broader patient base. Can I request a referral that was to a clinic, rather than a consultant, to be changed to a different hospital?
I'd rather see what you gentlefolks have to say about this before I telephone the medical secretaries at my GP practice, who, I have found, are rather too quick to say "no" and/or make something up. Its a case of knowing what the answer should be before asking .....
Thanks in advance.

yes certainly. Take control! Look on the website of the best large teaching hospital that you can get to. Look at the profiles of the respiratory consultants. Find one whose expertise matches your condition. Take the name to your GP and INSIST on a referral. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. Reception staff have no right to argue with you and the GP is legally obliged to comply with your wishes. Good luck. Be brave. Go for it!
I was born with PCD that badly affects my lungs. Wasn’t happy with respiratory consultant seeing a big hospital, so paid to look on line at all respiratory consultants in area, found consultant now seeing, she’s very good, understands PCD and will give advice over phone about which antibiotic (I keep few) to take when have flair ups. Was very worth cost and time to find her. GP useless! Best wishes, Jean x
