Normal?

Hi - I am wondering if others have had a sharp pain in their lung when having an exacerbation of bronchiectasis. It feels like a knife slowly turning inside. I have had this for years. Had tests done. I should be thankful that nothing has been found. Just wondered if this is typical with others as well. I can accept it, just finally asking a forum.

Over a lifetime of bronch I have had all kinds of pain from what you describe to a dull heavy ache in my most damaged areas, especially during an exacerbation. For years I had repeated strong words with my bronch consultant, who was also bronch's most eminent researcher because he kept telling me that lungs don't feel pain, that it is the pleura surrounding the lungs. Some doctors still stick to this belief which is very dismissive of what we know we feel. Eventually, after about 10 years of following bronchs and recording their pain sensations he apologised to me and agreed that we do get pain in our lungs.

morning, yes i am afraid it is part and parcel of disease, told by physio not to mouth breathe, which is hard not to do when you can,t breathe. Not sure if its any use but when you get those dagger type pains they are no fun .Good luck x

Dear busygardener - Thank you for writing. I will definitely try the "mouth breathing" suggestion!

Yes, have had this for many years and been told the same thing - how nice to hear that Littlepom’s consultant had the grace to admit he’d been wrong! Like others, I find forcing myself to close my mouth and taking slow, deep breaths through nose really helps with pain or with panic breathing. Takes willpower, but seems to work. Take care!

Yes and, for me, it generally means nasty infection! It is an excruciating pain though, isn't it.

in reply tofrose

Dear frose - You are right about that. An infection means doubling down in caring for myself. I have a nebulizer and use an albuterol solution. This has helped to get the terrible stuff out. Take care.
