Nurse said she wanted me to repeat it 8 times I thought dream on but I'll go with the flow, after third test she said I think that will do lol, anyway onwards and upwards as I will never give in even though only frustration is I've never smoked, regards to all Ger

Congratulations on your cf diagnosis. I say that because you will now get the care you need to properly manage your condition and hopefully improve things. Without knowing what lung diagnoses you were given before I can’t say for sure, but it’s quite possible if not likely that they’ll all be replaced with just the one label: the lung presentation and damage in cf encompasses all the damage you see in various other conditions, including asthma and small airway disease, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and bronchiectasis. As cf is genetic, there was nothing you could have done or not done to end up in this situation, but the fact that you never smoked will have gone in your favour for staying as well as you have for as long as you have. If they haven’t already, the next step will be a blood test to determine which genetic mutations you have. Depending on that, you may be able to access some of the new medications that have become available in the last few years: they’re not a cure, but for some people they have made a huge difference. Have you been referred to a cf centre yet?

Good that you’ve got an appointment in the pipeline. As I said, aside from the asbestos related damage, the rest will likely now just be considered part and parcel of your cf. Late diagnoses are relatively rare these days, but there are a few adults diagnosed each year. My daughter is 14 and was picked up as likely having it before she was born: diagnosis was confirmed at 5 days old via genetic testing, but her presentation is relatively severe. Without the treatment she’s had from being newborn, I’m pretty confident she wouldn’t still be here now.

If you’ve got any questions that I might be able to help answer, feel free to ask either here or via direct message, but having a cf diagnosis is a win in some ways, relatively speaking. If nothing else, you’ll get access to care and meds that aren’t routinely available to many other respiratory patients.

It must be a bit of a shock to have a CF diagnosis, bitter sweet after being told no cancer. Good luck with getting the right treatments for your condition.

So glad that the test for cancer is negative and although you have been diagnosed with cf as Charlie says you will have access to alot of meds and be well looked after which sadly alot of us with respiratory diseases dont have. So look on the bright side and keep positive x
