I used to go a lot to Spain but touring with my husband on a motorbike, dim and distant past! Stayed in Cuidad Rodrigo just west of Salamanca near the Portuguese border. Such a lot of history as it’s where the Duke of Wellington crossed with his army to fight the French, he was given freedom of the city. Also had a tour of the cathedral by a Spanish priest in French and I was sort of translating for my husband. Such an interesting and beautiful country.
Never had time for history at school but when you are given the opportunity to learn more about local history, sur place, makes it all the more interesting. I have a wine bottle capsule pinned up in front of me showing the earliest written spanish language. From the Rioja region, curtesy of "Bodegas david Moreno". Website worth a look.
