The UK government's plan to scrap day-to-day pandemic restrictions in England next week has no basis in science and amounts to premeditated murder for thousands of people, scientists warned on Friday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this week it was "highly probable" that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic is over as he pressed ahead with Monday's reopening, despite the Delta variant spreading out of control.
The step is justified by two-thirds of all UK adults now being fully vaccinated, he said, but England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warned that infection rates are on track to reach "quite scary" levels.
After convening for an emergency discussion about the UK plan, international scientists including advisers to other governments had brutal words for Johnson.
"I've written that I believe that the strategy of herd immunity is actually murderous," US scientist William Haseltine said.
"It is knowledge that you are doing something that will result in thousands, and in some cases tens of thousands of people dying. It is a disaster as a policy," he added.
"Crimes against humanity are certain acts that are purposefully committed as part of a widespread or systematic policy, directed against civilians, in times of war or peace. They differ from war crimes because they are not isolated acts committed by individual soldiers, but are acts committed in furtherance of a state policy.[1] The first prosecution for crimes against humanity took place at the Nuremberg trials. Initially being considered for legal use, widely in International Law, following the Holocaust a global standard of human rights was articulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948. Political groups or states that violate or incite violation of human rights norms, as found in the Declaration, are an expression of the political pathologies associated with crimes against humanity.
Crimes against humanity have since been prosecuted by other international courts (for example, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court) as well as in domestic prosecutions. The law of crimes against humanity has primarily developed through the evolution of customary international law. Crimes against humanity are not codified in an international convention, although there is currently an international effort to establish such a treaty, led by the Crimes Against Humanity Initiative.
Unlike war crimes, crimes against humanity can be committed during peace or war.[2] They are not isolated or sporadic events, but are part either of a government policy (although the perpetrators need not identify themselves with this policy) or of a wide practice of atrocities tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority. War crimes, murder, massacres, dehumanization, genocide, ethnic cleansing, deportations, unethical human experimentation, extrajudicial punishments including summary executions, use of weapons of mass destruction, state terrorism or state sponsoring of terrorism, death squads, kidnappings and forced disappearances, use of child soldiers, unjust imprisonment, enslavement, torture, rape, political repression, racial discrimination, religious persecution and other human rights abuses may reach the threshold of crimes against humanity if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice."
Xi Jinping or Vladimir Putin could flex their political muscles with the UN over this. You cannot sling mud around over their human rights violations without them throwing some back!
I somehow doubt that Boris would see that his actions are a crime against humanity but if it proves to be the case and he is charged it will not bring back those who lose their lives or heal those who end up with long term health problems because of contracting covid.
It's like we're living a movie or nightmare... deadly virus left to wipe out members of society most vulnerable, ethnic minorities, elderly meanwhile government flee to a safe haven... couldn't make it up. 🙄😱 x
With Parliament set to close for their long summer recess, it sure does look that way. I wonder where the safe destination of choice will be, perhaps the on the old military fortress of Roughs Tower which is outside of the territorial waters which has declared itself the independent Principality of Sealand.
Omg just looked at your link. They truly are sneaky devils in disguise it wouldn't surprise me at all a safe place just big enough for them..
I'm really not quite sure what to make of all this anymore, maybe they had a plan from the beginning? Maybe it was man made? I think most people are becoming suspicious now as our lives don't appear to matter. X
It's disgusting why won't they listen, they are supposed to have our best interest at heart. As long as he and his fellow minions are doing well why bother about the rest of the country. I hope they pay for their selfish ness. And I do apologize for upsetting anyone. Have a goodnight and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx
I seen this thread on a fb lung group so no one has been fighting our corner as Dr Jenny Harries no longer in charge of CEV and worse still no one has replaced her post. inews.co.uk/news/politics/n...
You’re right. God help those vulnerable people who live alone & are trying to stay safe & well. Their health and social care has been overlooked in favour of covid & long covid. They’ve been thrown to the wolves 😠 I’m lucky in having the support of family & friends. Many chronically sick people, including here, have no one
We have been left, unrepresented, alone and still vulnerable. A totally callous act by those elected who have the inate responsibility to look after our welfare.
Well I voted for them and I don't mind admitting it! It's called freedom of choice! If you remember at the time there was no credible opposition giving this government a huge majority. I'm not a die-hard Tory but I wouldn't have voted for Corbyn had he been the last politician standing! Voting is one of the few inalienable rights left to us and nobody should be made to feel guilty for whoever they vote for.
Fair enough Annie. I didn’t vote for either of them. There WERE other choices. I disagree, voting bears a responsibility. Hitler wouldn’t have come to power without those Germans who voted for the National Socialist party. Ditto Hugo Chavez or Pinochet. Shouldn’t they feel guilty? Not that I’m allying you with any them, of course, but you see my point.
I refuse to vote for any candidate unless they have proven to be honest and to represent my own views. So far, I have never ever voted and it looks very likely that I never will, which says it all.
It is still not a legal requirement to vote, yet. If that ever changes I am sure someone within Official Monster Raving Loony Party, or similar, will stand and I will just waste my vote.
No, I don't see your point actually and much less agree with it. I take exception to being compared with Hitler and his cohorts. Innocent German people didn't vote for the mass destruction of Europe, actions of genocide and the suffering of their own people, they voted for his rhetoric promising a better Germany because they were jobless, homeless and starving. If we're going down the responsibility road, that was aimed directly at the Allies who after WW1, imposed the huge reparations on that country that led to the abject poverty which enabled Hitler to come to power. That is a fact. The ordinary German voter was not responsible for the evil workings of the minds of a few depraved men.
You made a sweeping statement about nobody admitting to voting for this government to which I answered that I had. I bear no guilt or responsibility for anything that has happened purely because I voted for them. How to deal with this pandemic was not in their campaign manifesto as far as I remember. I'll also reiterate, had there been any credible opposition at all from any party then they wouldn't have won with a huge majority.
Annie, I thought I made it very clear that I was NOT comparing you to any of these extremists. I took care to say so. Nevertheless I apologise if I wasn’t tea clear enough. I have no wish to fall out with you and am sorry to have offended you. We reap what we sow. I voted Green, as I believe the threat to our planet far outweighs any other consideration. But that’s just my opinion and you, of course, are entitled to yours, and, of course, to say who you voted for without recrimination from anyone! I just said that very few people now admit to voting for this government. I think that’s true, not a sweeping statement
No, you said "nobody ever admits to voting for them" so that is a sweeping statement because you can't possibly know that for a fact and I didn't like the German analogy (I see you've edited and added a couple more distinctly nasty dictators in your first reply to me since first written) however I accept and appreciate your apology. Thank you.
Ok. I’m not sure you do, Annie, but let’s not argue about that too. (Btw yes, you’re right, I went back & put Venezuela & Chile in straightaway as it didn’t seem fair to single out Germany when there are so many other dictators)
I'm not arguing about it but I said I accepted and appreciated your apology and I meant it! Thank you.
I totally agree that the government is more concerned about finances than people's lives , perhaps their first kull wasn't enough that there are still too many of us that rely on the NHS due to health conditions and the government in its ultimate wisdom feels that a second kull will sort out the problem . I live in Greece which relies on tourism but I've heard the locals saying their worried that there will be a huge influx of cases if tourists arrive from high risk countries like the UK . These people value life more than money unlike our dear Boris .
The economy is going to suffer more if the NHS app keeps pinging people who then need to self isolate. Already hundreds off work affecting manufacturing. Your adopted country has more compassion. Take care.
I don't disagree with you yes the economy will suffer if the app goes ping like it did it's a tough road to travel between money and lives , yes Greece is compassionate for life but most people are
I was asked the other day by a friend who's well aware I'm stage four and have been given what I call my d. Sentence . Why I'm so agitated with what is going on in the UK , my answer was simple it's my place of birth Greece wasn't planned to be my home I just got stranded here and I have my daughter's back in the UK . People in power who play with people's lives like pawn's on a chess board should be able to be held accountable. Simple
• in reply to
My friend was quite shocked at my response but as I added ok I've got a short limited time of life left but it's the ones I leave behind I'm concerned about . My friend got the point 😂👍
Had just read about this in one of the newspapers. Our leader wants to be seen as a great prime minister but will this have any impact on him? I suspect not but would love to be proved wrong.
The Delta variant is already called the Boris Variant in some quarters. If another new one develops as a result of lifting the lockdown, gets out of control and slips through our borders, the whole world will call that the Boris Variant, his name will then be assured to go into the history books.
"Health Secretary Sajid Javid says he has tested positive for Covid-19, but has had two jabs and his symptoms are "very mild"."
He says he has tested positive" He says! Are we just to take his word? There have been so many lies and half truths told by the cabinet members about this pandemic. This could so easily be just more propaganda. I'll take what "he says" with salt and vinegar. If he is spotted somewhere by the Paparazzi behaving "normally", well he will simply say his symptoms are just "very mild", job done.
School children have been caught playing hooky by fooling the tests, why not him? Trust and truth have not really been the byword of this Govt.
We're talking about government their never wrong 🤣😂🤣 What do we know . It's easy to play with millions of lives . Let's face it when Boris was in hospital with covid he praised the NHS but how did he repay them ! An insulating 1percent pay rise . Government don't get held accountable properly .
Well it appears our Mr javid has covid but because he's had both jabs it's only mild , so I am wondering if he will be down the pub tonight sharing it with the public beings he and the government doesn't care about us lungies 😂😂😂
Thank you for posting this most necessary warning. I do hope everyone on this site will stay as safe as possible.
words fail me......
I don’t think the government are deliberately trying to kill anyone, Covid variants are responsible. We have a vaccine which prevents serious illness & death in most cases. I personally will wear a mask in enclosed areas & social distance as much as possible. I have had both vaccines I have a flu jab each year. I am over 60 with chest problems. This virus is not going away, we have to learn to live with it & be cautious.
100s of respected, emanate, qualified scientists and medical experts the world over do not think it that is quite that simple at all.
The danger that a variant that can evade the vaccines manifests because of this lifting of the restrictions is very loud and clear. If that happens then millions of more deaths worldwide will occur whilst scientists develop a new vaccine, manufacture it in large enough quantities, distribute it worldwide and get it in the population's arms. A complete reset if you will and all those that have died or suffer with Long Covid, the hardships of restrictions imposed previously will have all been for nothing!
A cunning plan to completely see off the NHS to put in place their other cunning plan, to privatise the nations healthsystem for the fat cats to get ever more rich?
Not referring to the front line. The NHS is probably the most inefficient organisation in Europe. It employs 1.2 million people including heaven knows how many ‘managers’ - yet it is still short of 40,000 nurses.Waiting lists to go to 13 million? Unbelievable!!!
Yes, as a retired nurse I saw no planning to replace the thousands of 'baby boomer' nurses all due to retire at the same time so a shortage was inevitable. The increased number of people on waiting lists is primarily due to the pandemic. Last year every ward at my local hospital was caring for covid patients.
My Oncologist referred me for a Sigmoidoscopy of the Bowels last Friday 9th July. A phone call from the hospital this last Tuesday and an appointment made for Tuesday 20th, next week and the Covid test team arrived at my home this morning.
Nothing wrong with that service from my hospital, damned fast even for normal times.
I have no problems with the Oncology Clinic at all. Regular contact and appointments along with regular radiology monitoring all through the pandemic. No bowel cancer was found and a large polyp removed there and then.
I, along with a lot of others eminently more qualified than myself or Boris' cabinet, see this as a huge gamble. A gamble with lives that do not belong to them, and that is the problem or crime if goes all wrong, putting lives at risk worldwide.
The world leaders were quick enough to blame the Chinese at the start of this, does Boris not think he will get the same treatment if he sets the world on fire for a second time with this policy? Of course he will try to shift any blame onto the public and bleat that it is their fault, but I do not think the world will see it that way. Fingers crossed that his huge gamble pays off.
Has the fate of the world really become reliant on crossed fingers?
A big question mark is still hanging over China that is where this pandemic originated and world leaders were correct in blaming China. Our government has manufactured a vaccine which is helping to save lives world wide. Boris cannot “set the world on fire “ that has already happened. Covid is out there and will be for a long time constant lockdowns will not eradicate it.
As I stated to you above, this is how he can set the world on fire:
"The danger that a variant that can evade the vaccines manifests because of this lifting of the restrictions is very loud and clear. If that happens then millions of more deaths worldwide will occur whilst scientists develop a new vaccine, manufacture it in large enough quantities, distribute it worldwide and get it in the population's arms. A complete reset if you will and all those that have died or suffer with Long Covid, the hardships of restrictions imposed previously will have all been for nothing!"
By lifting the restrictions. High case rates alongside vaccinated people can and will promote a variant that will escape the current vaccines, basic evolution points to this happening. So yes he can set the world on fire, the Chinese did it first, Boris could be the second to do it.
It seems the powers that be are willing to let Mother Nature take her course. Survival of the fittest reigns in her world because she has no moral compass. It seems the 'powers' don't either. They've not been impressed by over 400,000,000 deaths worldwide or maybe they see a dark benefit - less overpopulation, less starvation, less poverty, less pollution - a grim, soul damning reset button for the world.
Another very valid legal point is that we all have "the right to life".
"This means that nobody, including the Government, can try to end your life. It also means the Government should take appropriate measures to safeguard life by making laws to protect you and, in some circumstances, by taking steps to protect you if your life is at risk.
Public authorities should also consider your right to life when making decisions that might put you in danger or that affect your life expectancy.
If a member of your family dies in circumstances that involve the state, you may have the right to an investigation. The state is also required to investigate suspicious deaths and deaths in custody.
The courts have decided that the right to life does not include a right to die."
I for one can't wait to get my freedom back ,i hate these stupid disease ridden GIMP masks or face bra's they are disgusting looking things & they don't work . Locking the public up like caged animals also doesn't work if people are afraid ,stay indoors hide under beds build bunkers whatever ,let the rest of us live our lives without all these stupid unworkable restrictions & as for the NHS it's was finished long ago ,you have a core of about 30% hard working staff carrying the other 70 % of lazy freeloaders .
I take it from your attitude that you have not contracted Covid yet, come back and tell us what you think after it. I guarantee that you will sing a different tune, if you manage to survive it and especially get Long Covid too.
Hahaha, Bully? I am not the one resorting to name calling!
I have got a life and have fought hard for it thank you. I have had Covid and survived it, I know what I am talking about. I also have the second biggest of killer diseases and almost beaten it and that is just for starters.
Please show some consideration towards your fellow man even if it is the 1,000th biggest killer you should not be so blazé about it, and behaving as if their lives do not matter.
Simples, revisit your own statements and see just how out of step your denialist views are to the rest of the members.
If, if you have a lung disease it would make you a lot more vulnerable towards it. Looking through the total of all your past replies you have not actually disclosed what disease you actually have. Are you an agent provocateur?
In the interests of balance, I note that the quote was published in the Times of India, and must be a relief to Modi who has had a pretty rough press recently on his own approach to the pandemic. His most publicised action was to sack half his cabinet and, from his newsletter (which I receive weekly), his main priority seems to be opening new railway stations!
Makes our "make it up as you go along" strategy of "promising what you later find you have to reverse" look positively professional by comparison!
I think the word everyone is circling around is genocide of the people with illnesses.
Today I went to the English shop in falaraki other side of my island loads tourists from UK and even though the Greeks state masks to be worn in shops and inside any establishment I didn't see one mask , I went for a coffee with my friend and the taverna had probably twenty British tourists inside no masks and we walked right back out and refused to enter . Can't even stick to simple rules for others safety , 51 new cases today before tourists came the highest we had was eight
• in reply to
Must make you sick! In a pandemic people should stay put in their respective countries, not export these variants elsewhere. These tourists you mention are the sorts who don’t give a toss about others as long as they get their holiday. I feel like saying “so what if you can’t go on holiday? You can BREATHE can’t you? Count your blessings!” Cretins!
• in reply to
Totally agree with you on that , it's total disrespect for life . It's hard to put into words how I feel but today standing there and looking in I felt like screaming at the lot of them I felt both embarrassed and ashamed people from my own country could have so much disrespect for life in another country.
• in reply to
A young woman in the chemist’s today, breathing easily, was telling people (not that they’d asked!) that she’s exempt from wearing a mask. So am I, but I still wear one, and her breathing was totally uninhibited. Yes it’s unpleasant & claustrophobic & makes breathing harder, but most of us try & wear one. I don’t like to be judgmental without knowing the circumstances, but people could wear some sort of face covering or a visor at the very least. It’s starting to seriously get my goat 😠
• in reply to
It made me laugh because all the staff at the taverna had either mask or visor , one of the tourist told the owner that Boris said he's safe or he wouldn't let him out the country . Not really the attitude to take but yet again Boris knows best doesn't he 👎👎👎👎
• in reply to
The thing that got me the most was I very rarely go out apart from on the varanda and was enjoying a trip out where the rules are usually kept so I should have been safe . Some day out
• in reply to
Aww that’s just not fair is it? Selfish pigs! I’m with peege , ashamed to be British at times. As for Boris, well he only cares about Boris so only an idiot would quote his advice
• in reply to
It's all crazy . First it was oh I thought it only effected over 80s what's next oh I thought it only effected those with lung conditions , sad world we live in when you can't trust your own government 😃😃😃
I am with you 100% on that. I have always worn one, except the other day when I was given a shield at the hospital when the heat was too bad to wear my mask.
Oh yes . My friend couldn't believe what he was seeing he's Dutch and lived here for fifteen years and the taverna owner is a close friend of his , he saw us walk away and came after us to ask what was wrong but before asking he guessed , it left him embarrassed and kept apologizing
The masks worn by general public don't work so whats the point of wearing one ? If you want a mask that really works you need a surgery mask which is expensive & a one time only use . If you touch it at anytime you need to remove it & put on a fresh one after you have cleaned your hands .
So basically if masks don't work well I might as well walk up to the the first person I know has covid and ask them to cough and splutter over me and get it over and done with . Go sit down the beach enjoy the sunshine .
I don't make them pal don't know what to tell ya ,those spores are really really tiny & mask have to have holes so you can breathe ,what I do know as it's been reported wearing a gimp mask was a political decision rather than a medical decision .
Deaths are right down (tho creeping up.) But it’s not so much deaths which worry me, as the number of people left with permanent organ damage, or *just* loss of taste/smell etc associated with long covid. My lungs are badly damaged already, if they were any worse I’d have no quality of life at all. Masks aren’t foolproof, but if everyone wore one when in close proximity to others, they’d prevent a great many people becoming ill. That’s a good thing, isn’t it?
Perhaps stop calling them gimp masks, if you want to be taken seriously.
Wearing a mask protects other people fro m if yourself if you are asymptomatic, carrying the virus unknowingly. Once again, please show some consideration towards your fellow man even if it is the 1,000th biggest killer you should not be so blazé about it, and behaving as if their lives do not matter.
Since this all began I've worn a mask regardless to it causing me to struggle a bit more than usual , the only time I actually go anywhere is for appointments with the medical profession and yesterday was my first actual trip out for pleasure like a normal person , I was so shocked to see so many people breaking the rules just because they feel that because they have had both jabs their safe . The problem is your not completely free from covid you can not just get it but also be a carrier and pass it on . Before tourists came to the island we had odd cases the max being three but since we started having tourists in the number yesterday was fifty one cases which is a big jump ok not when you look at the UK but it's a small island here . Obviously I'm nervous but for someone to say that masks don't protect you was like being kicked in a sensitive area , the pulmonologist gave me a box of masks that she uses and told me about changing them etc but she stated that I'm far safer to wear them than the material ones that are fancy , I know that the specialists still aren't sure about masks protection but I feel every base must be covered for our own protection .
If the governor in my state of Alabama (U.S.) doesn't start an all out war between the people who got the jab and the ones who refuse it, we'll be lucky. But she's also trying to act like she's going to allow schools to start without requiring masks for the kids. The American Pediatric Society says it's dangerous NOT to wear them at schools, but even the parents are screaming they won't do it. I don't understand the way either of our governments are handling this mess. We are being threatened if we DON'T want the shot. Over 6,000 people have died after receiving it, since it's the VAERS site, some estimate closer to 10,000. Who thinks at 10,000 deaths (or 6,000 or 1) the benefits outweigh the risks?
My anxiety is so far past gone into orbit, there's nothing left to describe it😭
