Coronavirus: PM announcing strict new curbs on life in UK

The prime minister is announcing strict new curbs on life in the UK to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

From this evening people must stay at home except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and travelling to and from essential work.

Shops selling non-essential goods will also be shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together prohibited.

The UK death toll has reached 335.

If people do not follow the rules police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings, Boris Johnson said in a televised statement from Downing Street.

Other premises including libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms, and places of worship must also close immediately.

Parks will remain open for exercise but gatherings will be dispersed.

Not before time but I worry that saying people should use food delivery systems where possible will make it impossible for those in real need to get a delivery. The system is not set up to deal with the demand as it stands at present.

No doubt there will be some that think they know better, as has happened over in the continent unfortunately.

We are self isolating and had our on line delivery cancelled with no notification by Asda after waiting a weekfor it. We were really relying on it and no further delivery slots are available. Tried all the others and can order, but no delivery slots available. All are elderly around where we live and nearest family is 2 hrs away, so we will have to now risk going out to try to find essential stuff to live on. I have registered as at risk and can only hope for help from that source. Spent 86 minutes on the phone trying to get in touch with Asda to eventually be told a driver was sick and they couldn't deliver our order at all at any time. I imagine that many are in the same boat and think help must be given to the Supermarkets to cope with the still increasing demand.
