Prednisolone Usual 7.5mg a day maintenance dose.

Good afternoon everyone I hope your all enjoying the beautiful weather as well as keeping cool at the same time.

I have end stage COPD as well as severe bronchiectasis and brittle asthma. My GP put me on daily maintenance 5mg dose of Prednisolone some years ago as I have had to use Prednisolone for chest infections pretty much all my life. After my last hospital admission I was tapering off my 40mg a day, after reviewing my current condition my GP has increased my daily dose to 7.5mg.

Is anyone else on daily dose this high? Or is this classed as relatively low?

Thanking you all in anticipation for your replies and knowledge.

Hi Joseph, all I can say is that Pete takes 10mg per day and has done for a long time. It’s what suits him best.

Thinking of you. Xxxxx

Everyone is different and has different doses for different things.

I personally take 20mg daily for a variety of things, have done for more years than I care to remember but keeps me going

I was told by my GP several years ago that 7.5mg of prednisolone is the standard dose for a maintenance dose. Individual needs will vary.

Hi Joseph, 👋😊

I am on 7mg every day. I don't think this is particularly high but not low enough to stave off side effects. I was on 5mg too , but it was not enough to curb my Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. So they suggested I go up to seven which has done the trick. I hope you are doing okay.

Best wishes,

Cas 🌿

I managed to reduce from 7.5 to 5 at the beginning of this year after being on 7.5 and before that 10 for 13 years. My consultant would like me lower but my body is happy with 5mg at the moment.

Hi there, I’ve been taking Prednisolone since my diagnosis in January started on 40mg and am tapering off I had got down to 5mg then had some disappointing test results so I’m back up to 10mg now and hopefully that will keep me stable. Insomnia and ever present heart burn still with me though which is tough but if it’s for the greater good…..!!

Hi Pippydo, just concerned about heart burn that seems to be caused by Prednisone. Please ensure that you’re taking gastro-resistant Prednisone if not already on them.

I’m taking Omeprazole, my consultant is aware that I’m struggling with heartburn but at present learning to live with it, good days and bad days!!

I don’t know if this helps, but I take Omerprazole as soon as I’m up, then wait 30mins and have breakfast.I also take 10ml of Gaviscon liquid before going to bed. Such an exciting life I lead 😂

Hi Pippydo , 😊👋

I hope something can be done for the heart burn, apart from being unpleasant, stomach acid can potential rise enough to get inhaled into the lungs, often causing pneumonia. So it is important to keep your doctor informed. Hopefully if you start tapering off it may get better. 40mg is such a massive amount. xx 😔
