Good morning everyone. I was recently discharged from hospital with a bronchiectasis exacerbation. While I was in hospital the doctors asked if I had tried Oramorph before to help relax my breathing and help with my anxiety and panicking which can in turn make your breathing worse. I tried Oramorph and found it relaxed me, took the edge of my erratic breathing and helped with my anxiety. Upon leaving hospital I was given a small 10 mg bottle to take home. I was discharged late Friday evening so I didn't have time to contact my GP and now I fear I will not have enough left to last me the weekend.
My question is:- Do I just call my GP and ask for more as it was written up on my discharge paperwork or will I have to see a GP because its a controlled drug?

Perhaps as it Sunday you could email your GP to ask so that hopefully s/he'll see it tomorrow Joseph. Yes its a controlled drug, it has a street value! Im glad its helped you though. P
I have no Idea but there are a number of people here who take oramorph so they should be able to answer your questions. I just wanted to say I’m sorry to know you were unwell but am glad you’re home from the hospital. Sending you lots of good wishes 🕊
My understanding and experience of other controlled drugs is that as long as the hospital have added it to your prescribed meds, the GP should just issue it. The fact that it’s a CD (controlled drug) is irrelevant, although you may be asked to provide ID for collecting prescriptions containing CDs. They don’t seem to bother checking ID if delivering, though, not with independent pharmacies around us, anyway.
Joseph,just call your Gp and ask for it to be continued as a repeat prescription and that should he/she have a problems with that would they please contact your consultant.There may be a slight delay in setting it up but don't worry as the dose you will have been prescribed on discharge should not leave you with any withdrawal problems if there is a slight delay before it becomes a regular prescription.
Hi Joseph. Your GP should prescribe it because it was started in hospital and is written up on your discharge letter. It is a pity that the hospital didn't send you home with a larger bottle. They are supposed to send you home with enough medication to last for 7 days to allow for prescriptions to be obtained from a GP. I hope that your doctor issues a prescription quickly tomorrow and I'm glad that you have found the oramorph to be helpful.
I agree with CDPO16 about sending you home with sufficient meds for 7 days. Like you, Joseph, I find Oromorph really good in calming me down etc. I hope you get what you need very soon.
From experience GPs are not great at the moment at reading letters from hospitals. Personally I would ring surgery tomorrow. Check they have discharge notes/letter and ensure it is brought to gp attention.
If it as been recommended on discharge paperwork then it should be a matter of just ringing your GP. However from experience paperwork arrives late and takes time to copy and place on on the computer. ( I am lucky that my areas computer system is joined up and is instant). The first time my GP issued my own he insisted on seeing me as I am on a number of other medications for pain.
