I have COPD like folk on this helpful forum. I am becoming more reliant on my rescue pack. Any information on Prednisolone v Covid 19 jab?

As I understand things the Covid 19 intent is to boost your immune resistance system whereas frequent reliance on Prednisolone tends to weaken this. I now have received my second Pfizer jab. Are there contra indications? Keep safe - Scorcher

Do not understand your query. The COPD rescue pack is intended to be used for lung infections only unless otherwise advised by your Doctor or respiratory nurse.

Keeping the immune system as healthy as is possible at all times.

Yes thanks for that. I’m well aware of the benefits of the rescue pack but as in my question I would like to know if the boost content in the Covid injection might be ineffective when on a course of Prednisolone.

Pity you didn't ask at the time of your vaccination. Let us know what you find out.

Did occur to me but the notion of delaying the injection production line to ask the volunteer for that kind of information would have been not a good idea! I have an appointment with my respiratory consultant soon so I will double check.

Does this info help you;

Can I have the vaccine if I am taking steroids?

It’s fine for you to have the vaccine while you’re taking steroids. There’s no reason to delay the vaccine if you’re taking steroids, or have recently had a steroid injection or finished a course of steroid treatment.

Taking steroids as tablets, liquids, injections or drips might mean that your immune system doesn’t respond as well to the vaccine as someone who isn’t taking these drugs. This means that you may be advised to follow advice on shielding and social distancing guidance after you have had it. Steroid creams or eye drops should not affect your immune system or response to the vaccine.

Your healthcare team might want to discuss delaying a dose of steroids or a steroid injection with you, especially if there is a high risk of getting COVID-19. It’s important that you don’t stop taking your steroid medication without speaking to a healthcare professional, as this can leave you at risk of having a flare-up, which can increase your risk of COVID-19.

Prednisolone may affect the response to the vaccine but there are no contra indications as I understand it. A recent study carried out by Sheffield and Oxford Universities has shown that a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine gave strong protection to 99% of people. Whether your response to your second dose is reduced due to the steroids or not, I think it was important that you received your second dose at the designated time to give you the best possible protection.

Have been on prednisolone for 17 years.Your case may be different but I was advised long term use of prednisolone suppresses the immune system.

The vaccinations help kick start an immune response which in addition to using other things like hand washing social distancing etc helps.

Please raise your concerns with your medical team as they can explain properly based on your clinical condition
