Best memory foam mattress for severe COPD/bronchiecstasis/complex condition with no right lung function

I have a very severe and complex lung condition that includes some of the above. For the past 3 yrs I’ve been had excruciating pain in right side and ongoing back pain. I also get night sweats. I can’t get comfortable in bed at all and want to find a memory foam mattress that fits my needs. Does anyone have any experience of this?

My daughter got me a matteresss topper from Argos, I've slept really well since then. I also sleep with a fan next to my bed, which helps me sleep. Hope this helps. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Thanks Jack and Bernadette. I have a topper but it’s not memory foam. Overheating from the memory foam is one of my concerns.

Our memory foam mattress is too hot. Try looking at the Emma one or check online for cool memory foam mattresses. Hope you find what you need. Xxxx

Thank you. The ‘too hot’ thing is what bothers me as a few people have said that. I’ll definitely look at the Emma one and have a bit of a search. Most of them come with the option of returning within 100 days but I don’t want to be doing that loads of times.

I don't like memory foam. It seems to close round me and makes me breathless. I have one of the multi layer foam mattresses which are firmer. I have right side problems like you. Something like the Emma mattress. I have also had an electric bed for 15 years which really helps

That’s really useful to know. Someone I know (one of the nurses on my regular ward) also mentioned that she had had problems finding one that didn’t feel as if she was in a sauna. She got the Emma eventually and says it’s the best one. But she told me to look for the ones with cooling layers.

Yes there are quite a few on the market and they aren't as expensive as Tempur mattresses. I think mine was a Casper, very much like the Emma. Don't forget to get the vat taken off.

Don’t get a Tempur mattress! It gives too much and I suffer backaches. Not easy to sleep on my side so restless and non refreshing sleep. It retains heat and dips too much at the spine. I need a new one and the £2000+ has been an expensive mistake. Can’t try out beds during lockdown so you and I will need to order ones that give you the right to return after 100 days.

Dianemc01234 in reply toBunski

Yes. That’s what I was going to do. I don’t mind paying if I get the benefits so I do need to have the 100 day option. I’ll take Tempur off my list. 🤓

Hi Diane, I suffer from a painful back condition and couldn't get comfortable. I note the comments from bunski but I have to disagree, ive invested in a tempur mattress and it was the best thing I ever did. Its truly like sleeping on a cloud! It cost around £1600 about 2yrs ago. Very expensive ( I took interest free credit as I'm not rich!) We r all different but it's the best investment ive made. Good luck in your decision

I just spent ages answering you and lost it. Tempur is now back on my list. I also have back problems and my inter costal nerve block for right side won’t be until at least late May to June now. Left was done two years ago come August and I’ve had a LOT less pain since. The problem I would likely have with a mattress is overheating. I have severe right side pain which is not all back related. My right lung basically doesn’t take air in now and my anatomy has altered. Not noticeably thank goodness - which I put down to exercise - but it affects how I can lie. Once I’m asleep I don’t move. In a large person that would be a problem regarding overheating. But I only weigh 48kg and I want to sleep on a cloud. So I’ll be ready-assessing this one. Thank you Oscar.

You certainly have a lot of health problems Diane and I hope you can find the relief you deserve. I found memory foam toppers reasonably comfortable but made me overheat. I'll never regret getting the tempur mattress, most comfortable ever, good luck whichever you decide x

We invested in a SIMBUR mattress which is a cheaper version of the Tempur however still a lot of money. You do get a 200 night trial so if you're not happy can send it back. I suffered from back ache and poor sleep and my pains after sleeping are practically non existent however my sleep pattern is still bad. It's supposed to have a cooling layer - x

That’s the one I was looking at tbh.

I just bought a “Puffy” Brand foam mattress. So far so good.

Hi Diane, I have a memory foam mattress and pillow with gel. The gel keeps me cool and prevents overheating. This is important to me as my old memory foam mattress made me sweat badly during the summer. You do not have to pay a fortune, shop around by phone or computer, my latest mattress came from a bed factory near where we live, the mattress was half the price of the bed shop in our high street. Good luck Maximonkey

Dianemc01234 profile image
Dianemc01234 in reply toMaximonkey

Thank you. I’ll do that. The pillow sounds great as my night sweats are mainly around the right side of my neck just now. I think it’s overheating because I don’t move once I’m asleep and my right lung has pretty much had it. Full on night sweats happen with exacerbations and a cooling pillow might help to avoid some of those. Thanks again. Given me a lot to think about as this has become a real issue for me now.

hi Diane, just a thought. Make sure the gel sheet for the pillow is large enough to cover the whole pillow. Mine is not big enough, ok it does work to a small extent, my hair is not straight in the mornings anymore but if I am honest my neck is not covered by the gel sheet. I have seen larger sheets on Amazon but I have not bought one yet. Oh, another thing - don't do as I did, wash the pillow cover without taking the gel sheet out. The gel sheet no longer works after washing and I had to buy another. Take care and good luck, Maximonkey

Thanks! That’s exactly the kind of thing I would do. The size tip is very welcome. I always sweat around my neck and right shoulder. I try tying my hair up but it really makes no difference (apart from it hurts my neck and head) as I sleep on that side and don’t move. Knowing to keep the gel under there is a massive help. I wouldn’t have thought. I’d have just stick it the pillow case and away we go.

WE HAVE FOUND THAT MEMORY FOAM MATTRESSES DO NOT SEEM TO WORK WELL WITH INTERIOR SPRUNG BED BASES - SUCH AS WE HAVE - SO IT LOOKS LIKE A WHOLE NEW BED HAS TO BE THE ANSWER - A SHAME AS OUR BED COST AN ARM AND A LEG AND VARIOUS OTHER BODY PARTS.

HAS ANYONE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE TYPE OF MATTRESS WHICH WOULD WORK .... PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST INTERIOR SPRUNG BECAUSE WE HAD ONE WHICH "SUNK" IN VARIOUS PLACES.

MAYBE A HAMMOCK IS THE ANSWER???????????

TAKE CARE AND KEEP VERY VERY SAFE

Thank you. Please take care too. That’s one of the points I meant to make. I have just a cheap base with slats and apparently that will work. I don’t like the base, black faux leather with diamanté bits and storage drawer, any more, so am thinking to change to simple white wood from IKEA. With slats again. Seems to be the only option with cheap beds. Sorry that you spent so much and it’s not working out.

Bardear profile image
Bardear in reply toDianemc01234

Try removing the diamonte bits if you can. Failing that how about a valance to hide it all. Save on the expense of a new base. Take care and keep safe xxxx

Hi Bardear, we have electric beds which are slatted, bliss as I have spondylosis of the spine and my husband has muscle problems. Our new memory foam mattresses have gel tops which keep us cool. Going back to your divan not working with your memory foam mattress. Divan beds do sag after a few years and we should not buy mattreses and place them on our old divans, it just doesn't work. However, as you have bought the mattress and want to keep it maybe a cheap option would be a slatted wooden bed. We had one before we bought the eclectric beds, they are not expensive and you can keep these beds and change the mattresses. Good luck, Maximonkey

thanks for your reply will look into that option.

I don’t have the lung issues, but I have inflammatory arthritis including in my lower spine and hips, along with neck and shoulder issues from previous intracranial surgery. I’ve not had a comfortable mattress in literally the last 15 years as a result, and was routinely waking up with more pains than I went to bed with, so recently decided to change my mattress again. Having had expensive sprung ones, and tried memory foam ones, and a variety of different toppers, I started researching the current wave of hybrid mattresses like simba, Eve, Emma etc. They’re not cheap, but many offer a 100 night trial, and after much consideration, I bought a mattress from Brooke and Wild on the basis that they’re manufactured in the U.K. and still come in a range of firmness - many hybrids don’t come as a soft/medium/firm option. I got to spend 5 nights on it before the child had to come in, and whilst I’m wondering if it’ll turn out that I might have been better off with the soft rather than the medium, it is the best mattress I’ve ever had by far. The additional pain in my neck and shoulders disappeared over night, and whilst my hips were still achy in the morning, it was no worse than I normally go to bed with, so most likely just the arthritis now, rather than the arthritis plus a duff mattress! I have to sleep on it for 30 nights first, but they will then swap it out for a different softness or refund in full if you find that it’s not right. There are 3 models available from Brooke and Wild, and the one I went for is quite warm where you’re in contact with it, but that was a financial decision, and at least one of the more luxurious models has a cooling system to prevent that.

That’s really interesting. I saw theirs when I was searching but skimmed over it thinking they weren’t what I was looking for. I also have a lot of bone pain along with the constant mystery pain in my right side. I had an inter costal nerve block on my right side 18 months ago. Made a huge difference. Would have had the right side (different area) done in January but now it will most likely be May. Or even later. The appointment is May now but it’s so unpredictable these days. So this type of mattress sounds very interesting- especially given that you can choose from various firmness levels. Thank you and good luck with yours.

I have an Interstitial lung disease, along with auto immune conditions.ive been suffering wing hip and back pain,I bought a Silentnight mattress topper from Argos.I thought I’d try it before I bought a new mattress.we put it on top of the foam mattress topper. I slept for about 6 hours ,which is good for me.The positive was that instead of my hips hurting from 2 am,they didn’t start to ache until7.50am,which was good.

I was advised by a friend not to buy a memory foam mattress, hers made her very hot,she ended up replacing it after 6 mo ths.

As I get hit any way,I think memory foam is 1 to avoid.

I hope you manage to sort something out to relieve your pain..

Thanks. I already have the Silentnight mattress topper but I don’t have a memory foam one under it. It doesn’t make a lot of difference after a while. It’s worse without it but the mattress is rubbish so that stands to reason.
