Loosening mucus

I'm new here. I'm really struggling with thick stringy mucus. I already take Carbocisteine 375 mg and have a saline nasal spray. I know there are machines (not nebuliser's) you can buy that loosen mucus. I don't have a lot of money but I think I need one that works. Can anyone recommend one please?

Hi, I use Carbocysteine, also use an acapella.its a green plastic device which you blow into.I do t know hiw it works, but it helps me.

Y respiratory team gave me mine and replace it for me When it stops working. Last time I looked they were £60 on Amazon. Perhaps you could post them here and get other peoples opinions before you decide to purchase. I hope this helps

I can't take cabocysteine, so my GP prescribed a flutter. It looks like a chunky childs bubble pipe, it has a heavy ball inside that I blow against, That causes my airways to vibrate and loosen the mucus,

If your dr, wont/can't prescribe then you can buy them online for about £40.

Meanwhile make sure you drink plenty of fluids, avoid excess salt and sugar and practice the breathing/huffing cycle. x

Making sure your are hydrated (drink plenty of water always) is needed. Your GP can prescribe a flutter device or the acapella device, Check in with your GP to discuss which may be best suited to you.

Best wishes.

An Acapella along with Carbocysteine and the huff and puff to blow the stuff out.Ask your respiratory team for one.

Thanks for the replies. I was given 3rd lot of steroids and more anti B's today. Going for chest Xray tomorrow as there have been flecks of blood in mucus at the weekend.

I'll be speaking to my GP on Wednesday so will ask about the flutter and acapella devices then Thanks again xx

Carbocisteine does work for me but my respiratory nurse suggested Avamys Nasal spray to stop post nasal drip. This liquid runs down the back of your throat and adds to the mucus. Not able to buy over the counter but is available on the N.H.S. Two puffs in each nostril once daily. Does reduce the muck running down the back of your throat to the lungs. Acapella device helps me as well- can get it on the N.H.S.John

That nasal spray has worked really well for my son too. Highly recommend.

I take Carbocistene twice daily and find it keeps the mucus thinner.

I really struggle with this I take the same medication but because I get so much mucus I also suffer with sinus Infections which are so awful as they come with bad headaches. One of the things that helps with the break up of mucus is hot lemon drinks throughout the day this helps to cut through the mucus. Not sure if this help you.

I was referred to a ENT specialist at my local hospital as felt a constant lump feelings in my throat affecting my breathing.

Thankfully all was clear but the consultant found a redness due to long term reflux ( I take daily Gaviscon Advance & Omeprazol tabs for this ) he also suggested a daily nasal wash, he recommended an easy home made remedy ( in his words better than most over the counter or proscription bed nasal sprays )

He supplied me with a squeeze plastic bottle and a recipe sheet...1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoons of salt & 1 of Bicarbonate of soda, mix with 1 pint of water...hot not boiling water, shake well & use daily morning or evening or twice daily if it helps.

It clears my nasal mucus brilliantly...little like sniffing seawater when swimming lol. It also seems to help the buildup of mucus in my throat.

May not work for everyone but as the consultant said it’s worth a try...I’ve been doing this for 3 months now plus you can do morning & evening daily for little cost.

I too suffered with sinus problem but this has disappeared since using this daily nasal wash regimen.
