Spiriva alternatives... Something that doesn't affect heart rate as much!

Hi All,

Can I please ask what you tried after Spiriva please?? And what's been successful? have been suffering from high heart rate and makes me so uneasy, I've come off it and had a few panic attacks too!!

Please feel free to give suggestions too, I just can't have heart rate like that as can't function!

I'm happy to be on my blue inhaler but then out of breath on doing anything else but walking really which is a nightmare! I'm only 40??

Steroids have not reacted that well so far either!

Will be talking to Dr but will need some suggestions as don't want them just to stick me on something else and that be a nightmare too.

I can only suggest you discuss with your doctor Ami, respiratory consultant or nurse to see what alternatives they may suggest, they do need to know of your symptoms if they don't already.

Its a shame you can't tolerate spiriva but it is known not everyone can.

I am still using spiriva after many years, I admit I have had heart palpitations but currently they seem ok. Spiriva does help me breathe more easily.

There is an alternative to 'Spiriva' (Tiotropium Bromide) Called 'OnBrez' (Indacaterol) very similar in it's delivery as powder in a hard capsule being pierced in the machine and spinning on inhalation.

I was tried with OnBrez, but had a severe reaction to it and had to go back on Spiriva. We are all different and it takes a while to find the inhalers that suit us.

Most if not all inhalers, be that immediate relievers, long acting bronchodilators (LABA), long acting muscarinic (LAMA) or inhaled steroids (ICS), have the potential to cause tachycardia/palpitations due to the mechanism of drug action in the body. Some people will react differently to some than others, but it’s most likely going to be a trial and error situation until you find one you can tolerate and that’s also effective for your symptoms. Side effects can also settle with time, so as long as what you’re experiencing isn’t dangerous or otherwise completely intolerable, it can be worth sticking with a drug for a period to see if your body adjusts. It’s a basic example, but at one stage, 4 puffs of salbutamol would have my daughter’s heart rate elevate by 30-40bpm, but this reduced to almost no impact at all after a couple of months at the increased dose.

I was taken off Spiriva by my GP with no reason and switched to Braitus 10mg one puff daily which works well for me

My gp said it was cheaper, and the gov had asked them to make cutbacks!

Yes I believe I was told the same thing at the time and it makes sense if doing just as good a job.

Are you sure the Spiriva is causing the increased heart rate? Heart rate increases with panic attacks. I am on spiriva and have been for many years without any side effects. I can't recommend anything else as a substitute . The last time I had increased heart rate and lost weight it turned out I had a thyroid problem! Google spiriva , are heart issues are a known side effect?

Yes, I'm aware that we have side effects when first trying something but with Spiriva HandiHaler it seemed that my heart rate was quite high and a real uneasy feeling too. After coming off it for one day, my heart was fluttering a little so thought it's not best to continue.

There have been others who have suffered from super ventricular tachycardia from it too, so think it's best to leave it alone.

I can't see anyone having any issues from pulmicort or symbicort, therefore after discussing with Dr soon I may try that!

I just need something for when I get breathless after exertion? Which is a real nightmare as can't really do chores or anything?

So not sure what is causing this and why or what is best for it?

Or if steroids are needed for this and would address this issue? I don't really have mucus or a cough or anything else?

Thoughts please?

Regarding the effects of Spiriva, not sure of your dosage, usually it’s two puffs of Spiriva, might I suggest that you try one inhalation instead of two, it does take a while for your body to adjust but at the end of the day it is worth it.
