Morning folks, hope you are all doing ok and looking forward to some warmer weather,

I have posted about my cough before but at the moment I am feeling really down and unsure what to do. I sleep well all night but every morning I spend an hour coughing up sputum before my lungs feel clearer and not wheezy. It is not a nice cough and I do worry what it is doing to my already damaged lungs. I know how to do the coughs with the abc cycle but sometimes I just cough, I take bevispi, salbutamol and carbocysteine tablets , and try and walk a mile daily. I do my housework as normal although maybe a little slower. Sometimes I cough so much I get a pain across my back/shoulders. I am so frustrated, I have tried everything . I use an air physio daily, steam inhalations before bed and even bought some cough medicine with gualfasin (cant spell) to smooth my chest. Basically how on earth can I improve this cough without it being a daily morning nightmare . Could it be the inhaler needs changing ? Please help me if you can suggest anything, xx

Hi. I have copd but only minimal emphysema changes. The intractable cough was one of my worst symptoms untill palliative care suggested a low dose of oxycode. (They suggested morphine first but I'm allergic.) It has really helped.

Thank you for replying. I am willing to try anything as it seems to be getting so much worse. I have a docs appt on Friday but somehow doubt this will give me any help. I am wondering if the rescue pack of steroids would help. Will see what Friday brings, :)

I hope you can find some relief. Sadly very few gps truly understand lung diseases so requests for meds confuses them! (See my posts about my gp practice)

If it takes time to clear in morn, its getting rid of mucous build up overnight.i was taught to use salbutamol b4 lung clearance sessions.have u tried postural drainage with or without percussion.its helpful for me.id do another dedicated session before bed ,and if needed, shorter session in between.a tspn honey or glycerine can sooth throat+ some people find sipping honey in hot water helps.been bad winter for coughs lingering

I used to take Covonia mucus cough syrup with liquorice. But the last cough I had my daughter bought me Broncho Stop cough syrup. Worked within days and cough completely gone 🤞. Its expensive but on offer at Boots Pharmacy at present. The bottle doesn't last long as you have to take 15ml x 4 times a day if required, 6 times a day (90ml) so the bottle empties in a few days. Worked for me within a few doses . Good luck xxSheila 💕⚘

Hi Garshe - I bought some Broncho stop yesterday and had one amount but was coughing so much just before I went to bed I wondered if I had made things worse. I will try another this morning and keep my fingers crossed. :) do you have chronic bronchitis/emphysema? I have quite a few health problems and this coughing is pushing me to the limit, Thank you so much for replying x

I have severe COPD. Dont usually have a cough but my Granddaughter had a cough think I caught it from her. Broncho Stop stopped it almost immediately for us both. It is quite strong and the measure to take is quite a lot but it worked for me I love the taste of cough medicine odd I know.lol

Hope you are better soon xxSheila 💕⚘🤞

Thank you about the tip regarding Broncho Stop. Thought I'd was a good idea to keep in the medicine cabinet if I could find it in the US. Went on Amazon and sure enough.... found it. Would this be the same as you purchase? Have a great day!! xx

Hi Gladys, I have COPD and had a constant cough, I find sleeping in a semi sitting position helped also is the cough an allergy cough. Mine was being caused by excess stomach acid, the vapour was getting into the lungs causing the cough. Gaviscon fixed the problem and now all linked to a hiatus hernia

Hi Biker, I do have hiatus hernia and gerd. I take omeprazole but off it at moment before they do another endoscopy, perhaps that is not helping me at all. Thank you

Have you tried antihistamine an hour before bed, although this makes you drowsy it also dries up the mucus and may help with the morning problems you have x
