Mirtazapine

I've been doing some research on taking Mirtazapine when you suffer with COPD. I am quite anxious & feel quite stressed & last year while having a bad time with my COPD my Dr prescribed Mirtazapine, while taking this I felt I had more breath & felt able to cope better. Has anyone else tried this medication while suffering with COPD. Will be interesting to know what you think.

I don't have copd but I do have asthma and have been taking mirtazapine 2 months now. I've noticed my chest is less heavy and can breathe easier.

Hi there 🙋‍♀️ Jansy16 and nice to meet you on this forum. I've had very severe COPD for several years now but the last 5 or 6 yrs as the COPD worsened , i was put on Mirtazipan 45mg to be taken at night. They do help me drop off to sleep but not for long. Another effect they had on me was putting on weight but I'm still on them and they seem to help my depression and anxiety relating to my COPD. I also take Sertraline daily and together they are quite effective but aren't miracle cures. I've had CBT sessions and had extra counselling so maybe try CBT via the NHS who are very good indeed. Hope that's of some help? Speak to your Doctor and come back and tell us how thing's are going for you.🐿🌈

I have stage 4 copd but the only thing that the tablets done for me was make me very woozey through the day and I put on alot of weight, the only thing that helped my breathing was losing all the weight I had gained (through stress) and my breathing is brilliant!!

Reading the other posts it's interesting to note the mentions of weight gain. I've been on mirtazapine for years and I've certainly piled on the weight. On small maintenance dose at the moment. I would imagine any improvement in breathing is because of being less anxious.

I have COPD I have been on Mirtazapine for about 4 years now and I have piled on the weight, I don't think it is doing anything with the anxiety.

My experience was dreadful. My feet and legs swelled up I was very agitated and confused. I had constipation that resulted in piles. I was told to take it before bed and it did get me off to sleep but only for about 4 hours or so. This was during lockdown.

I find it does calm me so does help with the stress of copd, but I have put on a few pounds which I'm not happy about. I wish more research was being done on copd as it's a dreadful condition, I can't do much these days as I'm so breathless, how does it affect your daily life. Thanks for your reply.

I am glad that you feel it is of benefit but it just didn't work for me. I am at a severe stage so I do everything at my own pace - .no hurrying for me!

Hi Jandy16. I have been on mirtazapine for years. Really good anti-depressant and didn't affect my COPD but to be honest I went from 7 an half stone to 12 am half stone. I've never been a big eater but, even if you don't eat much they still bloat you really bad unfortunately.
