Fostair dose

What dose of Fostair 100/6 do most people take. I take one puff am and one puff pm . I supplement with Ventolin if I’m a bit chesty. A friend who is a nurse says I can use the Fostair two puffs twice a day if I find that better than using the Ventolin as 2 puffs twice a day is normal dose. I don’t really want to bother the Doctor with my query and due to corona virus I never got to see a nurse in my practice. Would be interested to hear what dose others take and do you use Ventolin or just more Fostair when needed

It should say on your prescription what your twice daily dose of fostair should be and this would be printed on the pharmacy lable on the box your fostair came in. It is normally 2 puffs twice a day.

Piper21 in reply toCDPO16

Sorry yes I probably didn’t explain it properly. I only take one puff twice daily because that’s what prescribed on the box for me. My nurse friend suggests that I can up it to two puffs twice daily when feeling chesty. She suggests it may help more than Ventolin . Thank you for your reply . I see you are taking 2 puffs twice daily so it would seem as my dose is quite low.

in reply toPiper21

I don't actually use Forstair.

I am advised to increase my steroid inhaler when I have a chest infection and use the ventolin more frequently if needed but not exceeding the maximum dose as mentioned in the information leaflets that come with the meds. I use inhaler meds with a with a spacer especially at times when I have a lung infection.

Possible upping to 2 puffs a day when you have a chest infection would be advantageous.

Hi Piper,

When I was on it, I took two puffs first thing and two puffs at night. I was told to continue using the Ventolin as needed, but in an emergency to use the Fostair.

I did have an attack while on it. I suddenly got breathless and started taking the blue as that is all I had with me. (I was upstairs and the Fostair was downstairs, which is where I usually took it.) My husband went and got it for me. I took two Fostair, by which time the attack passed off.

Thank you, so it can be used as a rescue also. I was only prescribed this over a telephone appointment, chemist delivered it because of lockdown hence I didn’t get the opportunity to ask the doctor or pharmacist questions

I am Fostair 200 and have two puffs in the morning and two before going to bed. Can take more if breathless as well as having Bricanyl as a reliever. Could be worth asking for a telephone appointment with your GP to discuss your dosage. If you feel well on your current dosage then that is probably right for you at present. The GP should be able to access your notes and check your prescription to see the reason for your prescription. Every one of us is different and need to be guided by our medics.

Fostair is a pressurised inhalation solution containing two active substances which are inhaled through your mouth and delivered directly into your lungs.

I think I would reserve the increased dose for time of lung infection and at other times use the ventolin up to maximum dose.

I take both these inhaler meds but separately, not as combi as in Fostair.

I have just been prescribed Fostair and the instructions are 2 puffs twice a day. This is a preventative med which acts longer term rather than Ventolin, which is a reliever and faster acting.

Having said that I believe there is some reliever in Fostair so have taken an extra puff but only when the Ventolin by itself needs some assistance.

You are welcome dear. I have had copd for around 12 years now and feel I know my own body and am knowledgeable enough about inhalers to 'tweak' them a bit if needed. x

I used to take Fostair 100/6, 2 puffs twice a day, for 2 years. For the last 2 years I have been taking Fostair 200/6, 2puffs twice a day. The difference between the 100/6 and 200/6 being a higher dose of corticosteroids in the 200/6. Yes, it can be used as a rescue inhaler, it is fast acting.

I found Fostair never worked for me. I started on Fostair 100/6 2 puffs once a day, then I went to Fostair 100/6 2 puffs 2twice a day then Fostair 200 / 6 2 puffs twice a day. Fostair worked fine if I was not in a period where I was prone to flare-ups and if I was having flare-ups then Fostair did not work. The finally to Revlar. I still have a few episodes with Revlar but I am finding Revlar works well.

I was taking two puffs twice a day which is the normal dose. Unfortunately I had horrific cramp at that dose and have gone back to seretide

Albertdog profile image
Albertdog in reply toTorchy

Same here - terrible cramps. Was changed to Braltus capsules one of a morning - good for a few hours after taking - but effect wares off. Need therefore to use more Salamol than previously to get relief. Must take this up with Doc when I am allowed out - and appointments restart.

I take Fostair and my prescription states 2 puffs twice daily!

I do forget at times. I’m taking this amount at present due to affect of pollen.

I decrease dose when not chesty.

I have asthma... late onset.

I take 200/6 twice a day which is a lot and I would like to cut it down.

Do you take it for asthma or COPD? The method of use is different.

If you are using it for asthma , the dose 100/6, you can use it 'as necessary' up to 8 puffs per day. see below.

Thanks for reply, no I’m using it for copd , does this make a difference?

in reply toPiper21

NICE says... in COPD use 2 puffs twice a day.... nothing about increasing it any more than that.

Hi I was on Fostair and found that 1 puff am and pm was fine. I also took Spiriva. I found I coughed more if I took 2puffs. My COPD nurse said not to use it more if I had a flare up tho the surgery nurse said I could. Now on Trimbow which replaces both Fostair and Spiriva. 2puffs am and pm.

My medication was changed from Sirdupla to Fostair for no reason .I ended up in Hospital as caused panic attacks and couldn't breathe. Put back on Sirdupla no problem . Everyone is different but when I put a post on re Fostair, many replied with having problems using it. It doesn't mean to say it will cause you problems as we are all different. I am happy with my medication and hope it wont be changed xSheila

Since my first diagnosis six years ago I use Fostair twice a day 2 inhalation’s. This is 100/6 but for a time I was using a much higher dose.

Piper21 profile image
Piper21 in reply tooneeyedjack69

Thanks for that, I assume it’s suiting you if you’ve been on it 6 years, were you using more when you had flare ups?

oneeyedjack69 profile image
oneeyedjack69 in reply toPiper21

Never increased dosage during exacerbation but did increase dosage to three times a day on the advice of a GP. I also used as I said 200/6 for a time until

A respiratory nurse deemed it unnecessary. I also use Spiriva and rarely Ventolin which I find now does not have any effect.

Fostair dosage. Im on fostair and the typical dose is 2 puffs twice a day. You should find you'll need less ventilin. I put it on my phone alarm. Excercise and plenty fruit and veg will help enormously. A 30 min walk, a few sit-ups on the edge of the bed daily and some press-ups will have a profound effect within just a couple months. Try it. Good luck, take care.

If you feel fostair works ok at one puff twice daily with occasional ventolin that’s ok. But if you feel one puff twice daily isn’t enough as you are over using the ventolin then speak to your gp.its important to keep things stable and tbh some GPs aren’t too busy at the moment. I use fostair 2 puffs twice daily . Never really used ventolin even though I have one somewhere. I would seek advice when increasing any inhaled steroid though .

However it does concern me re the amount of steroid I use taking 2 puffs and will try 1 when this CV dies down to see how I go on.

Piper21 profile image
Piper21 in reply toKristicats

Thank you. Yes I’m ok on that dose most of the time. Use Ventolin if I’m walking up steep hill or playing golf. I think after listening to all you lovely people I will feel ok about increasing it if and when I get a flare up

I have asthma and COPD. I wasn’t first prescribed Seratide but it wasn’t working well enough so they changed it to Fostair x2 puffs am and x2 puffs in the evening. I have the blue inhaler too in case. I stopped smoking when diagnosed and after a few weeks really felt the benefit of that

Mavary profile image

I use two puffs of Fostair twice a day and ventolin two puffs four times a day just at the moment for what the Dr thinks is hay fever. I was supposed to cut down on my Fostair to one puff twice a day but then I started getting breathing problems and had to go back on the two twice a day. Normally I don’t have to use ventolin, only if I get a cold.

I should say mine is 200/6

I use fostair i to was prescribed two puffs twice day. But I'm finding that I'm seems to be having an side affect with sleeplessness .

I'm seeing my Gp face to face at last after asking for over 4-6 months. Going to get it sorted amongst everything else.

This has come about because they tried to get appointment with the consultant as 9mnths since I last saw him, shouldve been in July but still waiting dont know when.

And I dont fancy going upto A&E incase I get admitted again, nothing against a&e it is I was bullied when I was in got to to stop coughing they got poorly patients in and they need sleep.

I thought what about me I cant help I didn't want to come in but had no choice and I have to cough to clear my lungs also I never get my meds for at least 3 days.

Not what you're looking for?
