Bronchiectasis & Hay fever

Hi

Do any of you here who have bronchiectasis also suffer from hayfever ? I went out for a walk today to get some air in my lungs but the pollen count has been quite high, so I don't feel any better, although I am still suffering a bit from having a drink (3pints) on Saturday as I mentioned in another post I started, I'm kicking myself to be honest as after a few weeks of feeling unwell I was beginning to feel better, so I guess the drinks didn't help, and the walk today hasn't made me feel any better because of the pollen count, it just seems never ending at the moment and I can't see light at the end of the tunnel, it's very depressing 😥

I have had bad hay fever this year. I take an anti histamine and it helps

Yes antihistamines are helpful.

Chat with your doctor TG that you are feeling depressed, there are several self help courses you can do on-line, some are by GP referral and others you can opt to do if you wish, the free courses I am referring to.

I posted something previously about mental health during the pandemic, perhaps you may find one or more of the links helpful.

There are groups on HU to discuss how you are feeling anxiety / depression or you might want to go for the positive wellbeing type groups.

Have a chat with the nurses on BLF helpline as well. they likely will have a few suggestions for you

It is overwhelming when first diagnosed but there will come a time you will adapt and manage things much easier.

Best wishes

One of my problems is asthma and it's been really bad the last couple of days. The grass pollen count here on the south coast is very high. Also rapeseed I think. I'm taking a daily antihistamine - loratadine - which helped a lot when the tree pollen was high but grass is even worse for me so I'm struggling. Definitely get some, or a similar one, if your hay fever is worse. Usually I try to get a bit of exercise but I couldn't possibly walk anywhere at the moment, I'm wheezing just sitting. Such a pain isn't it.

I guess I am very lucky I can walk ok, I tend to get wheezy on the night mainly when I am in bed, strangely enough I do find the wheezing/crackling makes it easier to breathe deeply sometimes or I could be just imagining it, it's the general feeling unwell that I'm struggling with, nauseous and the like I do hope that will pass, I take paracetamol sometimes and that helps, I just don't want to be taking drugs for everything, I'm just debating wether to start another course of antibiotics I have at the ready, as I seem to be getting pain across my chest, it's not constant but can be uncomfortable, I don't know if it's due to infection again or sleeping on my front sometimes and twisting my neck, as I said earlier it just seems never ending 😣

Don’t forget tho that you had started to feel better. So it is possible! You’re having a bad spell at present but you can feel beyttt than this. I know I can too. Two weeks ago I was able to walk 1km on my treadmill. Don’t lose sight of the fact that better health is achievable with a bit of luck

Also try the BLF helpline for a chat 03000 030 555. They’re really good and will spend as much time as you need going through your concerns.

I’m wondering if your meds are making you feel unwell. Some of them don’t suit everyone! Nausea can be a problem. Also, you’re fed up & probably anxious, which doesn’t help, and we’re all living such odd lives at present. I totally get it, I’m feeling quite down too. Life is just a bit pants at the moment which is why it helps to support each other. The only way is up though!

I had my asthma review over the phone yesterday , and I mentioned that I had become more breathless and cough ing .

She suggested tweaking my inhalers and taking antihistamines as the pollen count is so high.

My sore croaky throat she said may be caused by failing to rinse after using my preventer.

If I were you I would ring my health professional and ask for advice , and BLF too.

Yes - and asthma. I standard antihistamine might be insufficient. I have a strong prescription antihistamine prescribed by the doctor which definitely does the trick. You have to take them every day and not stop just because you feel OK.

I have problems with pollen, not itchy eyes etc but my airway certainly reacts to it. I know how you feel, everyday you have to firefight your way through. Antihistamines are part of the morning cocktail

Hi TG, do you take antihistamine tabs? If not, take them, you will feel so much better. If you do, you may be taking the wrong one. I suffer from allergic rhinitis and it too 2 yrs for the GP to get me settled i have not looked back since. You may need other meds too, so ring your GP asap. They will help. Take care, Maximonkey

Yes I take antihistamines, only ones from the supermarket though, which are about 30mg I am just waiting for a phone appointment from the surgery as I type, I'm hoping I can get some answers and I am going to ask to be referred to a bronchiectasis specialist, as otherwise I think I will continue to go around in circles and be phoning the surgery every week which is what I have pretty much been doing for the last few weeks, I need good solid medication and advice, which I'm obviously not getting at the moment from various GPs, thank god I was recommended to this site which has helped immensely at the moment.

I have Bronchiectasis and have had problems with the pollen this year when I don’t normally. I use Neilmed to rinse out my sinuses and that helps. There is also an interesting article on the BLF site about how the heat affects those with Bronchiectasis. It may be worth you checking it out. For the record I still drink except when taking antibiotics. In the words of basil faulty it’s one of the few pleasures I have left in life. I hope you start to feel better soon and you definitely need a Bronchiectasis specialist.

Yes, I too suffer from hay fever and I have found using Sterimar Breath Easy helps with the symptoms and also when I go out for my daily walk I do wear a mask. Hope this is useful
