Hay fever & Bronchiectasis

Hi everyone

My hay fever has been bad the past two weeks but since Wednesday, I have started coughing. A couple of times I have brought up green stuff. A quick Google informed me that any hay fever related mucus as a Bronch sufferer should be clear? Apart from feeling tired, and coughing a bit more, I feel ok. Don’t ‘feel’ like a flare up is coming on. Just concerned now though with what I am bringing up.

Appreciate any advice.

Thank you 😉

Does sound like an infection. Do you have a rescue pack?

If it doesn’t turn clear soon check with your GP 👍

Hello Lynn193,

Sorry to hear about your hay-fever flare up.

I am sure I suffer both Bronch and hay-fever although have been been formally diagnosed with the latter.

I would closely monitor things. Up your physiotherapy, water intake and get plenty rest

If it's the same colour green after a couple of days, seek some advice about it from your GP, get a sputum sample to them if you can and then I would usually start my antibiotics.

I don't usually reach for antibiotics straight away when my sputum turns green. I would monitor how I am generally feeling and make a decision based on many other things, do I have a fever, am I feeling more tired and breathless than usual etc. I am sure you will know in yourself when it's time to go to the next stage of treatment.

I do think this has been particularly hard for a Bronch sufferer because in order yo get things moving, we have to remain moving and I can only speak for myself, but where I usually go to work, I am constantly moving, walking etc but obviously the last few months I have been working from home and I do thing my sputum can remain stagnant and thickens up.

I do hope that is helpful and things don't worsen for you.

Do you take medication for your hay-fever?

Take good care 🌈

Thanks yes I do all of that and usually hold off taking antibiotics and see how I feel. I take antihistamines. This morning I got up early and tried some lung clearance as I definitely felt tight and couldn’t breathe well. After 15mins of trying, my throat was so tight, nothing was moving. I will try again later. I think a sputum example to the GP might be the best plan. Thanks 😀

I'm sorry you feel this way and do hope you are able to take things easy and get the rest you need at the moment.

I agree re the sample, I know most GP appointments are virtual but surgeries must have put some contingency plans in place for lab samples. Take good care and wishing you lots of well wishes and speedy recovery 🤗

Thanks 😀

I was told by the bronch clinic to send off a sample if my sputum changed colour to green or yellow etc, and to start rescue antibiotics immediately and complete the course whether or not the sputum gives a result.

I agree but I have been feeling ok so was holding off, thinking it was hay fever

Stones 93 advice is spot on, contact surgery and submit sputum sample asap. Telephone consultation with doctor may also be appropriate about use of antibiotics due to increasing resistance problems. You should have a rescue pack, however, for use. Very best wishes with this, I have the same issues.

Do you have an acappella machine to help get mucus up from lungs. Simple and easy to use. I use am &pm before using fostair inhaler.

Hi Lynne...my sputum samples usually come back negative so might be useful to have simple blood test for a CRP.,as well.If that’s raised more likely to be an infection.

Good luck!x
