Has anyone been through this?

Hey all. I hope you are all safe and well. I'm a bit concerned and wondering if anyone else is going through a similar situation. Since the lock down my husband has had a chest infection. He is now finishing his 6th lot of antibiotics and steriods and he still isnt feeling ok. I'm getting so worried for him. 111 and his doctor don't want him going to the hospital as if he contracts covid it could be life threatening for him. So we are at a pass as although his medication gets him through the day it does not clear up his infection. Sorry for the uncheery post.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Sorry to hear this MissyWilo. So what alternative has the GP put in place to help your husband? If you have a consultant you might want to contact them for advice or you could contact the BLF helpline tomorrow.

Good luck and I hope your dh improves soon.

he has been given double the amount of antibiotics and steroids but still nothing. the doctor hasnt asked for a sputum test but i may call and request one. I think it was a viral and thats why it hasnt helped but only this week has he started to feel pain.

Maybe a nebuliser could help. It might ease the pain presumably in his chest on breathing in and out. The surgery might just loan you one for the time being and if it works you might …. like me .... have to buy one. Hope all goes well at the A & E.

Just wondered if your husband has submitted a sputum sample which would help to identify an appropriate antibiotic if his infection is bacterial. If the infection is viral antibiotics won't help. I hope that he soon begins to improve.

Hello, just a thought......have you sent in any samples of your husband's sputum to be analysed? It's just that he has had so many antibiotics and I just wondered if he was given one appropriate to the bacteria or viral infection in his lungs.

I hope he gets better soon.

😊

Years ago Ihad achest onfection.

It lasted for ever!?

Eventually,I saw the GP,who specialised on heart etc.

He said,let me think.

We sat for 5 minutes,he then he said come off the atenolol .well just see how your blood pressure goes.

So, I did as he said, gradually. I started to feel better.

I don’t know if this has any relevance.

Perhaps you need to speak to your GP.

I Hope all goes well.

Don worry about an uncheery post, that’s what this forum is for.

My husband was admitted to hospital for what turned out to be a chest infection. He was tested for Covid and was negative which wasn’t surprising as we’d been living in isolation for several weeks.

In hospital he was treated with antibiotics ( Coamoxiclav and Clarithromycin) by IV then in tablet form, fluids and he used a bipap machine which he has at home. He stayed in 6 days. It was a very worrying time and I would not recommend it. He has been weaker since he came home but his sputum is clear so I’m assuming he has got over the infection. If your husband can receive appropriate treatment he is better at home. If his sputum is coloured he may still have an infection so consult your doctor and drop off a sample if you can. These infections can be very serious and take quite a while to recover from so he needs plenty of rest. I had to call an ambulance because my husbands oxygen level dropped from about 90 to 40 and his heart rate went sky high. If you have an oximeter you could check your husbands levels. If in any doubt call 111.

I hope he recovers soon

Take care of yourself too.

X

When I had a bad chest infection on antibiotics from my GP but it got worse over a weekend so I saw an out of hours doctor at the countess hospital Chester. He said you have pneumonia all infection on the lung is pneumonia and can be difficult to get rid of he gave me 14 day course of a stronger antibiotics and told me to go back to the hospital if I didn’t feel better in 4 days . The strong antibiotics that worked began with C Take care xxx

Yes I agree I think you could ask for a sputum sample to be sent off to be sure he’s in the right meds.

Are there not separate wards for people with covid? Can you ask the question?

I've experienced that ,Hun ,but ended up in hospital ,long before the virus , they didn't even find a " bug " until they took a sputom test , and seemingly it had been there and had " colonised " in my lung ,I needed stronger antibiotics for a month XX so I would say insist on a sputom test XX good luck stay safe xx

Hi.. What a horrible situation for your husband to be in. Definitely agree with putting a sputum sample in.. Long overdue. If he has a virus all the antibiotics won't be helping though may be good for secondary infection. I take azithromycin 3x weekly, have done for 9 yrs & was reading that it may help with covid. Not suggesting that he has that but it's such a weird virus hard to know. Really hope he starts to feel better soon... Xx

Good to hear that .I was wondering if you could chat to them as I find my Bronchiectasis nurse at local hospital really helpful and easy to talk to and they always say to get sputum sent off as other folks have said.

Your husband needs to do a sputum sample so that he is on the right antibiotics for his chest infection. I am surprised that hasn’t been suggested before

Hi, I think I've had something akin to that and have treated it with standby meds I brought out of the UK. I've had in addition some Spanish antibiotic so I too am on my third dose. Is it wort starting another, Too many antibiotics makes one immune and they become a waste of time but if the infection has not gone away you need to speak with your GP again. I am currently trapped in the Canaries Spain and although antibiotics are readily available they have to be prescribed by a local doctor at 20 euros+ cost of the meds. Your first port of call has to be the local GP again. It could be a simple change of antibiotic may be the answer. I find Charthromycin and an anitibiotic staring with a "D"with steroids works best for me, nothing less, the first one they give you is usually a waste of time Amoxicilyn but it is cheaper and so say more wider ranging.

Sorry retaining names escapes me but I know it when I see it .

Keep well & safe both

IKeith

Hi, so sorry to hear this, I don't know if you have tried honey & onion juice?

Thinly slice 1 onion & cover with raw honey

& Leave for 1 hour & it will become a syrup, take a tablespoon of this syrup after food as it is strong. Take it again after every 3 hours. If you want a quick fix then squeeze the onion slices & add the onion juice to honey. Good luck 🤗

It is an immune system booster, I found this recipe on a video where a young girl would be taking antibiotics over & over again until she started taking this onion Juice. She suffers from chronic Bronchitis
