Does anyone else have experience of having Haemophilus Influenzae bacteria in their lungs please? I would be interested to hear what treatment you have had and how successful or not that has been for you. Thank you

Hi yes I grow haemophillis influenzae bugs, they are nasty little beasties I take azithromycin all year round and have rescue pack of prednisolone and antibiotics in case of a flare up .twice admitted to hospital with pneumonia once they got their hooks in me so now I am really careful about germs from grandkids and keeping lungs clear

Oh yes! Had this critter on and off for about 3 years. Best to stay away from under 5s if you can. They carry it in their respiratory system . Eventually I had IV Tazocin. I didn't take steroid tabs but looked up what supplements would help and take zinc, vitD, fish oil, and vit C . I have not had it for about three years now. I do have doxycycline at the ready if it pops up. Im on Fostair and incruse .Eat well, drink well, exercise and rest well too. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply GintyFergusion.

I'm a teacher - so staying away from the under 5s is difficult lol. Although I do know that this part of the problem.

I don't think I know enough about supplements, so the idea scares me little. If you could enlighten me further on your regime, I would very much appreciate that please?

I have a probiotic supplement on its way to help combat my immune system whilst taking antibiotics.

Hoping that will help.

Hi, well I'd just try to keep a sensible distance, wear a mask? Good ventilation. No doubt being a teacher isn't the ideal job. Vit D is anti inflammatory, zinc boosts immunity, I also take Vit E which is an anti oxidant. Vit C protects health . Fish oil reduces inflammation. That's it really but to be honest after I didn't have contact with small kids I was much better. Good luck . HI is very annoying and you don't want to become colonised. They told me I was but I've not had it in 3 years so not sure how that works unless it's just lurking!

Again, thanks for your helped you. Apologies for misspelling your name earlier 🫣.

May I ask if you were a teacher too please? I'm wondering if this is a very big part of my problem? And if so, if you are no longer around primary aged children, this is really what helped you?

My work and family life brought me into contact with under 5s. That's no longer the case . What I understand is we are not a risk to others with normal immunity and healthy lungs but I'm no expert. I believe we are more vulnerable due to our conditions or rather the condition of our lungs.

Further to my question above, I have a one year grandson. While I have the HI bacteria, I am assuming that I would be putting him at risk by being around him or will he be ok if he has had the HIb vaccine?

Update

Well, I had my sputum rest result back today. I thought for sure it was going to show another high level of HI bacteria as I have felt awful, but it was normal. So, out of the last five sputum tests given over the last 8 months, the first was normal; the second was HI positive; the third was normal; the fourth (November) was HI positive - very high level and now this last one, normal again.

These results really baffle me, especially when you know it's another chest infection. I just don't understand what is causing me to have so many chest infections or exacerbations (as my consultant calls them) if there is no bacteria?

My consultant said he would consider a different plan of action if I have another two flare ups showing HI present since seeing him in November. His plan was to prescribe a low, long-term antibiotic. In some weird sort of way, I wanted this sputum test result to show HI positive so that I could get this suggested treatment to try and help me be free of the constant coughing up of phlegm and persistent chest infections. I can't see this happening now. I'm meant to be seeing him on the 16th January. As this last sputum test came back normal, I haven't a clue what cause of action he will take now. All I know is, is that I can't carry on having exacerbation after exacerbation and then being showered in prednisolone and doxycycline again and again, which is what has happened since February. 😒

Another thought in the matter - if I'm not testing HI positive every time, could it be any other medication that I'm taking that may be causing the exacerbations/ chest infections?

To list:

Flutiform 125mg/5mg changed to Symbicort 200/6 in February, then changed back to Flutiform 125mg in April upon my request - felt really ill on Symbicort.

Flutiform 250mg in May (increased by consultant)

Flutiform 250mg changed to Trimbow 87/5/9 beginning of December- changed by GP-felt Trimbow was making me feel worse and then got another chest infection - could this have caused latest exacerbation?

Change back to Flutiform 250mg 20th December upon my request Omeprazole 50mg (since 11th December) - queried GERD with consultant

Montelukast (since May)

Fexofenadine 180mg (since May)

Mometesone 50mg nasal spray (since May)

Any more thoughts welcome please.

how did you get on in the end? I found this via google I currently have chest infection and sinusitis caused by hemophilus that I cannot shift. I’ve had 4 rounds of doxycycline and steroids and it comes back as soon as finish the one week to two week course. I’ve been referred to chest consultant and ENT. So fed up of being unwell. I’m 34 fit and healthy and just been floored by it. I do have two young kids I suspect passed it on.
