I’ve been classed as mild since diagnosis 2 years ago but went for spiro today I’m still mild no symptoms as such I run I’m never short of breath but the Reading came up lung age 79 I’m 60 the nurse said take it with a pinch of salt but it’s a bit frightening to say I’m mild so what would lung age be in someone severe ?

Ignore it , I think it is designed to frighten people into quitting smoking. I have very severe Emphysema and my lung age is 162 years, go figure that, how many 162 year olds have you heard of :)

You don't mention what lung condition you have. A little more information will us help you.

I have very severe emphysema. My lung age 2 years ago was 189 and some days it definitely feels like it! I hope that you stay mild for many years to come.

Never mind the lung age, it's how you feal that actually counts, I've been mild for 10yrs now with very little change.

Thanks I’m not smoking for 2 years now I keep fit so hopefully I can keep it at bay

No one medical cares about the lung age, and it seems rather arbitrary from what I can gather. Case in point, my 12 (next week!) yo has had a lung age of greater than 25 since being 8 or something. The machine couldn’t give an actual number because it was configured for paeds and >25 is literally the highest it will go. Could be 26, could be 126, who knows? But if it really mattered they’d be trying to find out. We know she’s got pretty bad lung damage already, but her fev1 is in the high 70s when she’s well. Bottom line from hanging around here for a fair bit has to be it’s about how you feel, rather than what the numbers say.

I would not worry too much Martinack59 . The main thing is you feel good and are able to do things you love, such as running. 😊 When I was diagnosed at 40, my lung age was 96. Enjoy your life!

Best wishes,

Cas xx 🙋🐕

I would take no notice of numbers. I have mild bronchiectasis and some days I am great and some days I am terrible so it really doesnt mean anything. Please dont let it worry you x

Nurse is quite right because it is an average, so most people will be above or below it. If it's any consolation, I'm moderate/severe with a lung age of 90 when I was diagnosed at 66. But I'm now 69 and my lung age is still 90, so I'm gradually catching up! All rather meaningless if you're getting the right treatment to control your symptoms, which is what a diagnosis is for in the first place.

My lung age was 80 when I was 62 years old, but only 73 when I was 63 last year. My lung capacity was 115% the year before last and 123% last year. I take this all with a pinch of salt and actually find it quite funny. I wonder what this year's results will be.
