Does anyone know what health effects lung hyperinflation on its own can have?
I had my lung function test on Friday and was told I have this, it fits with the bullae that I was told about. I’m struggling to find much about it on the internet. Not sure when my appointment with the respiratory consultant will be but have my Cardiothoracic appointment in just over a weeks time .
I’m lucky that the other 2 tests were in normal range for my age and height, and showed no airway obstruction and normal gas exchange.
Thanks x

I had hyperinflation and still do in one lung. It really means you are not able to get air out of your lungs completely, due to a narrowing of or in my case destruction of the airways. This causes them to inflate beyond the size of someone with healthy lungs . The result of this is you will feel full very quickly after eating and you will be short of breath. You can breathe in pretty normally, but feel like getting your breath completely out isn't possible. Fatigue and low energy is common.
I struggle to eat properly sometimes and have a low BMI (I’ve been taking a PPI to help but thought it was just due to acid). Fatigue and dizziness are the main things that prompted me to see my GP which resulted in chest x-ray, then CT scan, then all the referrals I’m currently having.
I have hyperinflated lungs due to copd and a couple of nodules . It’s what Caspiana said, you have trouble getting all the air out. With breathing exercises and preventer inhaler i manage it as best i can. Your gp or nurse would explain to you.
I’m glad the breathing exercises and inhaler help you manage it. It’s always good when something helps, even if just a little. What types of breathing exercises do you do? Xx
I have a dvd for copd. It’s just taking deep breaths to a count of about 7, then breathing out slowly through pursed lips, just a few times. Then there’s a few physical exercises , very gentle, just standing and lifting arms and circling them ( ‘opens’ up the chest wall), just simple exercises, and walking at a steady pace ( if can manage ). It’s worth getting a dvd for our conditions. 🙂
I have one called Move on Up. Amazon online have it. I was also given booklets from my respiratory nurse and in them there was an offer for a copd dvd so i sent for it. It was a free one from the blf site. If you look on google for blf site you will find it.
