I have a better joke, I have been quoted nearly £27,000 for 4 weeks in New Zealand, cancer is a killer in more ways than one. I could not go anyway, I am no longer able to fly, but then a Kiwi is flightless.
They do not like people who have had cancer, no matter what type or where it is/was. Totally discriminating. At the time of diagnosis you do not think about travel repercussions, just survival, but it follows you around long after, like a bad smell as if you had dog's doodoo permanently on your shoe. Mention that "C" word and the premium rockets sky high.
Like yourself, many companies just refused to quote at all. Quoting out of the world amounts like that is really just the same, instead of refusing they just price themselves out of the market. Even after 5 years from the end of successful cancer treatment and declared "cancer free" it is still not affordable. I have another 3 1/2 years to go.
Had a similar problem as 2greys this year. We wanted to go on a tour of America crossing there & back by Liner but the minute the word OXYGEON got mentioned the cost rocketed to astronomical proportions. Only 2 companies would actually quote a price with the cheapest in the region of £20 grand which meant we had to abort the plans.
Instead we went on a 28 day cruise with Cunard. The cost of the travel insurance was £2400 approx through “All Clear” cruise insurance who we will certainly be using again.
Ahh Judes, it’s so disheartening. I’m sorry! Did the cruise cover America as I know the insurance premiums are insane for there? Europe can be a little cheaper.
I have traveled with saga cruises who always include an insurance, not saga insurance but great lakes. Cost hundreds not thousands. If you have your own insurance you get a discountThe ships have been compared to travell ing care homes by some people but i do know they accepted at least one person who was being treated for cancer. There are always a few wheelchairs aboard as well and the crew have always been very helpful and caring. I claimed ins a year ago when i had an exacerbation and they paid the bill for visit to doctor and antibiotics over £200 very promptly without query.
We did have a medivac lsst time too , someone with suspected heart problem. Another advantage is that they provide a car to pick you up from home so you do not have to carry luggage at all and many cruises go from UK without any flights. Agreed the cost is more initially but I always thought it was.worth the extra. You negotiate when you want to stop for break with the driver and might get the car to yourself if there is no-one else travelling from your area. We usually did. The luggage is transported for you and appears in your cabin before you sail. I would do this again if i was not struggling with damaged hip. The ships are new this year ,exept one older one finishing in mar next. I do not like that ship and would not recommend it. They are both about 1000 passengers , small compared to some floating multi storey cruise ships, but bigger than i like. Food and service are excellent.i went 10 times with them on different ships.
I will say that if you visit Malta you are covered in Malta by the reciprocal health agreement so do not have to have health insurance. However bear in mind that Maltese pavements are not wheelchair friendly!
Check out the post office insurance, I used them this year, I have COPD, it cost me £56.00 for a nine day trip to Germany, also if u get the insurance from them ur then entitled to a better exchange rate on ur currency, I looked at loads of insurances before I found that one, good luck 👍🏻😊
We had the same trouble getting insurance and being refused cover because of my illness
We tried lots of different companies I need oxygen ambiglatury and also to fly
We was quoted £1200 for a 10 day holiday that’s the best offer we could get so we dicided to ask about a multi cover for a 12 month period the plan was to do 3 holidays the cost was £1550 so we thought great we will take this in and do it
Unfortunately we only managed two holidays in that period but it still worked out cheaper
The company was. All Clear
I actually did an article on travel insurance for the daily Telegraph Saturday magazine on behalf of the BLF 27th July 2019
Try Holidaysafe. My sister who had bowel cancer and colostomy bag and I who has (IPF and osteoarthritis) were insured to go to Greece for 12 days for £60 each. The excess is set at £100 but far cheaper than paying for operations etc. Worth a try anyway? They also paid out with no problem when we had to cancel because my sister was in hospital. However, age can also make a difference to quotes, over 80 and they think you are about to fall off your perch!!😂
I have been refused insurance, plus had some really high quotes...however I Was shocked by cheaper insurance deals when i logged onto Money supermarket.com....give it a try and good luck!
Have you tried Nationwide Travel insurance. Cost me £200 odd I have obliterative bronchiolitus, rheumatoid arthritis, sjergrens syndrome plus other bits. That was including cruise!
Thank you for all your suggestions will hit the internet again and see what happens.
When I was doing a cruise round the med I did become poorly and spent 12 days in an Italian hosp which was covered by my EHIC card. Lovely hosp in Venice
Stupidly didn’t have insurance, so, £700 for the ships doc, paying for a flight home, rail travel from airport to home, hotel bills, meals and paying to get luggage home that I’d left with family.
It was the hassle as well trying to organise everything to get home. My Italian is not that good tho the cruise line did organise a translator who was great, brought me coffee every morning as Italian Hosp’s don’t provide drinks.
Big problem with cruises are if you are ill then they will drop you off at the nearest port/hospital. So it could cost them a fortune to get you home as they do not know where it could be? My Brother in law had it when on a northern lights cruise. He was dropped off and once the hospital had him well enough to go home they then had to move to another major city to get a flight but also wait for a doctor to come to Norway to then stay with him while they flew back to the UK. Which was not where their car was! The doctor then went to his door and he was home but the bills were fantastic!
My best quote for a trip to Spain some years back was £750.00 but with an excess charge of £750 per treatment ! I stay in UK now too. Even then while I was in Weymouth I ended up in A&E this year! But it did not cost me a thing! ( Except 2 days of my holiday which the place we stayed at re-let and paid us back)
I think its a problem we have all come up against, I declared all my illnesses and the premium wasn't too bad as we were cruising and didn't anticipate any problems. I had pneumonia in April time and as we should notified the insurance company who said another £169 please,
What can you do other than pay, the other problem is that you should notify them if you have any flare ups well that's not much use to us is it, we would never be of the b phone.
Wish you luck we have decided we might do a cruise from England so no problems with flights etc. other than that we might go on a coach tour of UK. Breathe easy.
Try InsuranceWith, seem to have a good reputation. It’s really not just about finding a cheap premium but more about doing a little research to see how these companies behave when something goes wrong. I found a list online showing what percentage of claims each company paid out on. Interesting reading particularly when you find that all of these companies use only a handful of underwriters. They are the ones who make the decisions. There’s no point paying fifty quid for insurance only to find they won’t pay out when you have a claim.
