For the first time ever, investigators have identified a washing machine as a reservoir of multidrug-resistant pathogens. The pathogens, a single clone of Klebsiella oxytoca, were transmitted repeatedly to newborns in a neonatal intensive care unit at a German children's hospital. The transmission was stopped only when the washing machine was removed from the hospital. The research is published this week in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

New research led by Newcastle University has shown that it is the volume of water used during the wash cycle, rather than the spinning action of the washing machine, which is the key factor in the release of plastic microfibres from clothes.

Millions of plastic microfibres are shed every time we wash clothes that contain materials such as nylon, polyester and acrylic.

I chose my washing machine for the short cycle to save electricity and water, the hot cycles to kill germs with laundry disinfectant added. It was expensive but would see me out as a last purchase. I truly thought it would be eco friendly and I was "doing my bit" Disappointing to realise that I am helping to wreck the seas. Worrying to know that our world is gradually being stuffed due to lack of information of what we do. People like you 2greys really bring us knowledge and for that I thank you. Polly X
