Sharon's CT scan as part of the Lung Cancer Screening trials has come as a clear result. She also took part in a study looking at a blood test for detection.
I have been running around like a headless chicken this morning, the washing machine sprung a huge leak. Pulling the machine from it's slot under the worktop, which is no mean feat, then mopping it all up, before it had chance to leak through to the flat below, into a children's bedroom. My Adrenaline working overtime, then the breathlessness hit me, how I hate this incapacitating disease. My son is coming over to help take the washing to the laundrette in his car before he goes to work.
Now it is a question of finding a new machine, looking at getting a washer/dryer. The tumble dryer died a couple of weeks ago as well. It makes a lot of sense to have a single machine as our kitchen is really tiny, two people in there is a no no, it is literally that small a cat could not swing a mouse in there. Presently the tumble dryer blocks off access to the gas meter and boiler which is far from ideal, delaying shutting off the gas main tap in an emergency. Grrrr.

Good news about Sharon but what a pain appliances are. We have separate washer/dryer as have the space for them. Our daughter had a washer/dryer and wouldn’t again. The dryer cycle took ages. Good luck anyway. Xxx👍
So sorry that has happened to you. I know what you mean by a tiny kitchen, my previous home had a tiny kitchen, like you couldn't get two people in it, where I had to have the Fridge Freezer and tumble dryer in the shed attached to the house. It had a large lounge but tiny kitchen, not a good design. Combined Washer Dryer does sound like the way to go. Do hope that you can get it all sorted soon. Best wishes. xx
You are obviously having a really bad day 2greys. Its when these things happen we come face to face with our limitations. The things we used to do with ease now cause us great difficulty. Many of us will appreciate how you feel and I hope you get things sorted soon.
Good news about Sharon. You coped very well with the washing machine problem and I totally understand what you mean about the breathlessness hitting you like a ton of bricks once the adrenalin has worn off. How this disease destroys our lives can be soul destroying at times. Had a washer drier once and the drier packed up just after the warranty expired but the washer went on for years. Hope you find a suitable new appliance soon.
Good news for Sharon 👏 👏 not so good re the leak. If it's any help I have a Hoover washer/dryer, condenser variety. Its been running well for 5 years so far. Got this one because it was reasonably priced and for lower decibels in my sunny kitchen/ diner. Good luck 2greys. P
I have a Hotpoint washer drier that is 7yrs old and going strong. Simply wouldn’t have room for separate machines. Originally looked for new washing machine but realised little difference in price of washer drier!I don’t dry until bone dry but enough so once clothes shaken they dry off in a day or so.
Oh my 2greys, first some excellent news closely followed by a nightmare of a washing machine dying on you. I do agree with Sassy59 regarding a washer/drier and I've only heard negative reports about them.Please congratulate Sharon on her results and you can give yourself a very big pat on the back for finding some super-human strength to pull out a very heavy washing machine. Now rest!!! 🐿🌈😷x
As long as it half dries the washing that will do or fully dries a few items that will do. We do have a pair of retractable lines over the bathtub and a combo push and pull, heat exchanging fan/vent above it, so the air gets changed without losing any much heat in the winter. We will get used to it. Where the tumbler sits it will make room for the two rubbish bins freeing up some open space.
Great news about Sharon, but what a nightmare with your washing machine. Appliances cause huge amounts of stress when they go wrong. I’ve still got my dishwasher that caught fire, because I can’t get it out of the house. When my fridge freezer went wrong I had to have an internal wall taken down and the appliance lifted out through the window. The dishwasher can just stay where it is! It doesn’t help that appliances are incredibly heavy and so difficult to move with their flat smooth surfaces and nothing to get ahold of. Good luck with it all.
Managed to get it back in it's hole for now, sort of, no room to leave it out. The new one will be getting delivered/installed and the old one taken away, with 3 flights of stairs I am certainly not daft enough to attempt to do it myself, although I have done it in the past when a lot, lot younger and fitter.
Very pleased to hear Sharon's news, that's got to be a weight off both your minds. As far as the w/machine is concerned, they are like cars - there's never a convenient time for them to break down!
We were fortunate the leak was spotted before there was an absolute flood, I managed to put it on the spin cycle to pump out a fair bit of it. Perhaps only a gallon actually leaked out, which was enough to have caused real problems in the flat below had I not mopped it up quickly. Insurance would have paid for any damage caused below, but that is not the point and does not cover any inconvenience to the family below.
Washer driers are a real pain. The dryer takes forever and runs up the electricity bill. You can get a fixing thing that holds the dryer on top of the washer. I call it a fixing thing because I don’t know the real name
Yes you do buy washerdriers but you can also buy a washer and a separate dryer and stand the dryer on top of the washing machine and buying some kind of stabiliser thereby saving floor space
I see, not a option. there is a worktop above the washing machine with the microwave on it above the microwave is the extractor fan. I really meant what I said about the size of the kitchen with limited options on arranging stuff. We do not have enough cupboard space as well, pots, pans and food mixer etc. have to live under the the stairs in the hall.
I'm sorry to hear your plight 2greys. I have a washer, dryer in one and it has been very good. The filters and whatnot need constant cleaning but that is a small price for clean, dry clothes. 👕👚🧥🧦

Hi 2greys. Pleased about Sharons CT result, 😀. I have a Hotpoint washer dryer due to lack of space and it is somewhat slower than having a seperate dryer, but once you get used to that it is absolutely fine. Ideal when space is limited. Good luck. John
We have lived for over 35 years with the danger of having the gas main shut off valve, at the meter, being blocked by a tumble dryer. One thing whist fit and healthy and able to quickly drag it out of the way, now though, it is too much of an effort and takes time to wiggle it out of the way. The last time the meter reader came , he had to do it for me. The logical thing to do is get the combo unit, the increased cycle time is not exactly a problem anymore.
Great relief re results? A washer /drier will make things a lot easier. Since my illness kicked in I have decided that (if I can afford it) I will grab anything that makes my life easier or happier!
U did well to pull it out + get mopped up.yes,jobs that used to be easy certainly hit home now.i hope u get a new 1 sorted easily.i like separates but my son likes his combined x
Pleased for your results on Sharons tests. Washers are a blinking nuisance. My daughters has leaked a few times and the girl downstairs has been very good about it but the repair man has been out a few times and it still isnt reliable. I had a tiny kitchen when I lived in Hong Kong and could reach everything without moving but managed to cook a three course meal for six. Shop around for your washer dryer and read all the reviews x
That’s such good news about Sharon’s test results. I see that you have already selected your combined washer/drier so I hope that the installation etc goes well. It is difficult getting rid of old appliances and having that done for you is such a bonus. My admiration of your dealing with the leak as you did and putting your neighbours convenience so high on your priority. Well done you! Enjoy watching that first wash/dry tumble around. New machines are always fascinating for a few days before they just become useful.
Great news re Sharon. Check out reviews re washer/ dryers I wish I did as I had to get rid of one it didn’t dry anything properly and took absolutely ages.
i have limited space so have had washer - tumble dryer combination for tyears but it doesnt dry the clothes very well . look at Which reports on that . I have warm air heating , not radiators so turn up heating in bathroom where it is hung on a gadget that has 5 lines running across the over the bath. So cannot use bath or shower with clothes still on it . tumble dryer gives part- dried washing and most then dries overnight. There is a gadget called a Sheila which Lakeland sell and which can be pulled up high nearer ceiling,. it used to be in many kitchens in times past. can you use your balcony ? i find the sheets are a problem. not easy to hang up so looking to see if there is still a laundry service that would do those.
