Chest Infection

I have a prescription for 5mg prednisolone to take 6 for 5 days. I took them yesterday and was sick half an hour later. I am also taking Doxycyline 100mg for 5 days. The steroids seem excessive. Will I still get better if I only take the antibiotic, I have a chest infection.

Have heard of this with some other Members, I have never been sick with Pred. Have you Read the Leaflet. Phone your GP and explain to Receptionist or go to your Pharmacy. Hope your not sick Now, Prednisolone are a Pain for most , but without them we would all Suffer a lot More. always take the Antibiotic with them for Infection. take care. xxx

Being sick or feeling sick is a common side effect with doxycycline. I take them as my rescue antibiotic I have only ever felt sick. But it will pass. nhs.uk/medicines/doxycycline. or you could see if your gp will change them. But most antibiotics cause this side effect

The tablets are tiny I cannot think why they would have caused you to vomit. The Doxycycline is an exceptionally strong antibiotic, it may be them that's upset your stomach.

As you have to take the pred 1st thing in the morning could you eat something ie a plain biscuit or cracker before and after taking them?

Hi peege ,I always dread taking steroids (prednisolone), they reck my stomache ,and it doesn't matter how early in the morning I take them still carnt sleep ,six tabs for our condition over five day is what we all have when having infection ,sometimes eight ,make sure you have something substantial in your stomach while taking them ,doxycycline is fine for me ,bear in mind they may not suit you ,the last time I had steriod I ask my gp could I take four a day for seven days with two over for the eighth day ,he said it was ok ,but ask first

Thank you all. Today I have taken 3 after lunch and will take 3 more after dinner. I took the antibiotic mid morning after toast. Couldn't do it earlier as I take xantac first thing.

So far not feeling nauseous.

If you take steroids too late in the day they may keep you awake. Hope you feel better soon

Hi Pom I was given doxycycline a few times with prednisolone and I felt sick but it says to drink a lot of water with the tablet which I did then it was better. If the gp has given you prednisolone I would take them as they will speed up recovery. If the water doesn’t help go back to your gp or ring them and they should change them. X

Thank you, 3 at a time and half a pint of water seems to have done the trick.xx

It is worth going back to Drs about the dosage of Pred. I have had to have my prescription altered to 8 on the first day and gradually reducing by one on each alternate day after. That's a bit less brutal. Also I was recommended to start off with Antibiotics and then to use the Pred if necessary. Regrettably Pred are a necessary evil. Do speak to Dr and I hope you recover from this soon. Look after yourself
