Use of sugar.

Hi everyone, I am approaching my seventy seventh birthday and thank god despite my cold am still working. I was put on a mantainance dose of prednisone 10 mg daily. Noticed after several months that my waist had gone out a bit . Drink a lot of coffee like 7 or 8 cups per day with 2spoonfuls of sugar each one . Not a big eater but after a while I noticed fatigue setting in daily. Should have said I stopped sugar . Had a pretty bad flare up recently and am now back at work . Decided that I must need some sugar so I limit it to 6 spoonfuls daily, Definitely feel a lot more energetic. I have no diabetic problems etc . Would it be possible that I wasn’t getting enough!

Hello Crankshaft .

Let me first say Happy Birthday in advance! 😊 Seven is a very good number here in Japan, in fact it is the most important number in Buddhism. We have Seven Gods of Luck and a very special celebration in summer called the seventh evening. 🎎🎋🎐🗾 So I wish you much luck for the coming year!

As for your sugar in take, I personally try to limit my sugar intake to almost nothing. I know it sounds a bit dramatic but diabetes runs in my family so weight control for me is pretty important. Predisone doesn't help either as you have noticed. Being heavier definitely makes breathing more difficult.

Enjoy your birthday.

Warm wishes,

Cas xx 🙋🐕

Funny you should say that but something in me imagined seven was considered lucky. Hope you are well and thanks for the kind words. It always helps morale when someone says something kind . Japanese people live very long and smoke a lot just like me . Don’t think they are really good for copd but I couldn’t be bothered stopping now . Many blessings 😇

Hi Crankshaft, glad to hear you are getting better, cant believe you are still working at 77 good on you. Its a shame that you cant stay off the sugar, its so bad for you, better that you eat more protein, eggs, bananas, fatty fish , water and exercise will all give you energy. You probably felt tired due to giving up sugar but your system would adapt over time, sugar gives you too much of a high and then drops suddenly making you more tired. The steroids could have made you feel tired as well as putting on the pounds around your waistline.. Glad that you are getting back to normal, best wishes Irene x

Hi crankshaft, I wouldn't change a thing, the prednisolone doesn't help waistlines, and 77 soon, still going strong, cant be all bad, carry on young man. Jane

Over fifty years ago I worked with a group of consultants and one day one of them put a book on my desk titled “ Pure, White and Deadly”. You can guess what it was about. I must have been eating too many bars! I have not touched sugar since then or had any sugar in my baking cupboard.

Welcome. Since I joined I have been waiting for the chance to start a club.😂

You just gave it to me. Thank you.

Join me in the “ ALL THE SEVENS” club, being formed as I write.😂😂😂

Anyone over 77 is eligible to join though I will have to wait until May, but I can pretend.😉

My take on life is moderation in all things, amongst other things obviously.

So having been vegetarian for 30 years and vegan for 20, I have never

eaten sweets, biscuits, cakes or desserts, take always or even microwaved meals.

So I am blowed if I will sacrifice those crunchy golden caramel coloured grains that go into my ☕️

There is added sugar in so many foods that people are not even aware of.

I don’t intend to give up anything else that gives me a little pleasure.

Really at this age, what would be the point?

However whatever suits you and makes you happy.

Not what you're looking for?
