We all need a fan?

Hiya everyone,

In addition to the twice weekly catchup regarding the Pulmonary rehab course I have recently started. I ought to add ,for those of us who have not heard this advice the following .

This was given to me when I went for my PR suitability assessment, while talking to the senior staff member / assessor, she noticed that I was clutching a Ventolin like my life depended on it. I had to admit that I felt I would spiral into panic if when getting breathless I could not have a shot of the Ventolin. She pointed out that the amounts per day I was using were definetly not good for my heart rate , and she suggested that I purchase a small 3 blade hand held fan to blow at close quarters into my face when I felt breathless instead of using the Ventolin.

Apparently the feeling of moving air around your lower face,(. Mouth and nostrils ) has a calming effect which combined with remembering that if you concentrate to breath out as much stale air as possible, the breathing in will ALWAYS take care of itself.

Don't waste money on the cheepo ones from pound shop etc, a rechargeable one from Amazon is a much better bet. The photo is of mine , it gets some serious hammer everyday, and now I still carry the Ventolin, but I would feel uncofortable if I didn't have by one and only fan.👍😂🍺😎🇵🇹

Cheers

Chris

Pete has a small handheld fan that our daughter in law got for him during the very hot weather. He doesn’t use it much but he has it beside his chair just in case.

I do like the look of your fan though Chris, very nice. Xxxxx

Hi! I take Ventolin 4 times a day following Doctors advice. I find it helps prevent a C.O.P.D. crisis. However, it is stimulating and can become habit forming. Use only as prescribed> Wishing you the best!

I was advised by my domicilary Pulmonary Nurse Specialist that a fan might assist when I had moments of panic. As I am in final stage Bronchietisis and COPD and am on oxygen 24/7 I was a little sceptical about this. However my one of my carers had a pocket fan that she had bought at the airport in the summer and suggested that I tried that before buying.

It is a 4" tall three bladed fan that is powered by 2x AA batteries. The blades are made of soft rubber and don't hurt if they catch your lip etc whilst running. I use it edge on to increase the airflow around my mouth and nose while still using my oxygen. I have found that it does help to calm the panic levels down and allows me to get myself back under control. Apparently they are sold widely at checkouts for around £2.99. I keep one in my wheelchair bag as the are such a handy size.

I can vouch for the fan too!

Just when you get that panicky drowning feeling, the fan on the face really helps.

Apparently it triggers a reflex and your brain believes it must be getting enough oxygen because of the breeze.

Everyone should get one.
