NIV machine (Non invasive ventilation machine)

Hi everyone my name is Linda, I have been a member of the BLF for a few years but have not blogged for a while although I read the post most day of the week.

I have severe COPD and have had it for about 10 years, my consultant at the hospital has loaned me a NIV machine ( non invasive ventilation machine) because I am a CO2 retainer which I use during the night. My problem is that it makes a dreadful noise when the mask slips, I woundered if anyone else has this problem and what you do to overcome it.

Many thanks

Regards Linda

Hi Linda,

I’m on BiPAP NIV machine as well for o2 retention at bedtime, it sounds like you are using a full face mask, one of my masks is the ResMed AirTouch F20, makes a similar sounding noise at times, you could try adjusting the straps to correspond with where the movement is. Don’t over tighten the straps though, this can cause more leaks weirdly.

I also use the DreamWear full face mask and it’s my favourite, it’s not like a full face mask, it sits under your nose and over your mouth, so you have nothing over your nose or forehead, ask your sleep lab if you can have the same mask, just make sure you get the right size cushion for it.

I’ve had my own machine at home now since January this year and the difference it’s made to my life is amazing, I no longer fall asleep in the morning. I was put on oxygen 24/7 in April 2017, after being diagnosed with Type II Respiratory Failure 1 litre at rest and 2 litres ambulatory. Since being on BiPAP at home, I’ve had my oxygen reduced to 15 hours a day, 8 of which is at bedtime, I still have to use oxygen ambulatory between 2 and 5 litres, but that is a small price to pay. It has enabled me to complete a 10 week course of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, which I still do two times a week at home, I wouldn’t have been able to do that 12 months ago.

I hope you get your mask problems sorted Linda, I know it can be a pain, but the difference it makes to your life is worth it.

Ian.

I had the same problem check mask is on tight enough. And if possible try and lie on side I find it the pressure keeps it in place. You do get used it's trial and error keeping the mask in place. The hospital gave me a mask that you put up your nose but I couldn't cope with it..your hospital might have different masks you could try. Worth popping up and having a word with them. I have got used to it now. I do have odd nights when it's noisy. That's when hubby gives me a nudge so I can move positions. Ps. I find the higher up I am it helps.
