Recently, when breathing is bad, I have a very runny nose that I can't control, and an urgent need to pee! Anyone else have this problem as my COPD nurse says she has never heard of it.

Maybe not linked to copd directly but depending which inhalers you use can cause side affects such as these for example spirivia Respimat xx

Oh! I didn’t know that. I’ve been on Spiriva Respimat about 3 or 4 weeks and lately seem to need to pee more frequently and more urgently. I don’t know if it could have affected me already (no idea how long side effects take to manifest themselves)

It could also be stress induced, ie by a panic attack. Thankfully only experienced before being diagnosed and in the dark with what was going on with my health.

Hi, yes I have that problem, but usually goes along with either anxiety or a panic attack.

Hi Sally

I would say get your blood oxygen checked, do you have a oximeter at home? Check it at these times.

One of the symptoms when blood oxygen drops quickly is a need to urinate.

Did your COPD nurse check with oximeter when you saw her? She should know the symptom of low blood oxygen.

Of course there are other reasons for runny nose and urgent need to pee as well.

If this is happening regularly see your doctor, don't just accept what the COPD nurse said.

It could be your need to pee is down to coughing and causes stress incontinence, as regards to a runny nose I have that when having a coughing fit and after bringing up mucus, I dont think you are alone on this, but get checked out anyway. X

Thanks for that idea but I don't have a cough!

Hi yes my husband has a runny nose (he has IPF) severe in the morning when he gets up and also when going to bed it just runs constantly. He doesn't use inhalers, he has had several antibiotic sprays from Dr but nothing seems to help. Dr doesn't seem to think it's connected to his lung condition. It really gets him down, although when he is just sitting watching TV it doesn't happen, very confusing. I hasten to add don't think he has the urgency to wee bit I will ask him 😦.

Try an corticosteroid inhaler - worked for me and it IS related to my lung condition (though the medical profession don't understand why it works!).

I'll ask the nurse about that inhaler when I see her, thank you for that

Meant say that it is a NASAL inhaler. I found out by chance as I was using Beconase for hayfever in summer and found it helped to reduce my incessant winter colds which seem to have an asthma link.

I think getting up & moving about makes me breathless & that's when troubles start.

If I sit still for a while, Breathlessness improves & also symptoms

I have this most days! I had my check up last week and oxygen was 98%. I too, put the urge to wee down to constantly coughing. I do suffer from stress so I'm not sure, I've never bothered asking about it. I don't like medication and am not on any inhalers so can't blame that. I just give my nose a good blow and go to the loo! If you do find out,I'd be interested to know!

I'm sure it's all related but.....I don't cough and it's not stress. It's every time I'm breathless, usually doing mundane tasks indoors, I have a runny nose and need the loo!

I agree Sally. I find the same

I'm amazes a COPD nurse said she'd never heard of that problem ! Many with COPD experience it usually when becoming short of breath. Something to do with the heart sending amessage where it's needed and so neglecting bladder control. Both men and women I know need to use pads during an exacerbation. Sheila x

thank you for that, not sure I need pads yet!

I don't reply very often but had to reply to this I am exactly the same when chest is bad I have moderate to severe copd I have runny nose but I put that down to cold and running to the loo all the time to the cold as well but on reading your letter I guess I have reason to why

Yes. During extremely severe breathlessness and a panic attack the bladder releases a small amount of urine.

I’m new to this, but I get exactly the same symptoms. It’s like an adrenaline rush I think

That's happened to me twice as I can remember during an attack of severe breathlessness. No runny nose but the feeling of I'm going to wet myself. Luckily it's not happened. I read that it's your brain concentrating on getting oxygen to your heart and leaving other organs such as the bladder to fend for themselves. I told my repiratory nurse and she accepted it as a normal part of the attack. Because of my latest attack I'm being considered for ambulatory oxygen.

All the best and Stay dry.

I have found that Carbocisteine makes my Nose Drip, it Liquidises the Mucus in the Lungs. I'm on Oxygen. As for peeing.....that is a Normal way of life, coughing, laughing, weak bladder. I don't know any other explanation sorry. All the Best. xxx

The only thing that works for me is a steroid nasal inhaler such as flixinonase
