Just finished steroids and doxycycline for yet another exacerbation .. Only this time I’ve been left with “take a deep breath in” every 5 minutes .. where did this come from? .. xx

And what are you supposed to do for the rest of the time. Stop breathing...... 😂

Maybe you don’t understand where I’m coming from? .. I don’t want to stop breathing ..quiet the opposite actually! .. I’m upset that you think my post is funny especially when I’m on here for HELP!..

in reply toCandyred

I am truly sorry if I upset you that was certainly not my intention. I have been in exactly the same place on the breathing front myself over the last 13 years of living with COPD. The reason for the comment was just how little people just don't understand how truly terrifying it is to be in such a position. Sorry again I think I'm a bit blasé after all these years. It seems to me that you're not getting any of the help you need from the people in the medical profession that you are being supposedly cared for by. Contact your GP and ask them exactly what that is supposed to mean.

Take care and I hope you feel better soon.

Love

I think you have misunderstood the deep breath in every five min is not an instruction from dr but a involuntary action. Unless i have misunderstood in witch case im sorry and ignore my advice 😉

I think you may have misunderstood Patsyann. When I read your post where you said “Only this time I’ve been left with “take a deep breath in” every 5 minutes .. where did this come from? ”, I kind of thought this is what a doctor or nurse had instructed you to do and after reading Patsyann’s response it would seem that may be how she interpreted it as well and when she said “And what are you supposed to do for the rest of the time. Stop breathing” it was a sarcastic remark towards whoever gave you those instructions. After reading your later post it became more clear what you meant, but again don’t think Patsyann was making light of your post or situation, actually quite the contrary, was commenting on what she perceived as ridiculous instructions.

I would go back and check with your health professional to see if your chest infection has gone.....maybe a blood test as well as them listening and checking your breathing pattern.

Others have mentioned a similar breathing pattern here in the past.....a need for more air.

While you wait to see your GP, have you tried the pursed lip breathing technique......sometimes air can get trapped in the lungs and I find this helps. Breathe in gently through your nose, then gently out through your mouth with pursed lips for a slightly longer time. Repeat a few times then go back to gentle, nasal belly breathing with a relaxed upper chest/ shoulders and stomach area.

Try distraction techniques too until you see your GP or nurse.....I find puzzles, or online jigsaws, colouring books, crochet....take my mind off off my breathing for a while.

Ring for an appointment on Monday or 111 today if you feel the need.

For people in the UK, the BLF have a helpline open during office hours on 03000 030 555

Take care.

Whilst it may be disconcerting, I do not think it does any harm it has been happening to me for the last 18 months. I find that it only happens at rest, not whilst exerting myself. When I asked my consultant about it he said it was just an involuntary action, likely caused by breathing a little too shallow whilst at rest.

So if i undertand you properly you are breathing somewhat normaly then you have to take a deep breath. Have you checked your oxygen levels. As it may be you are not getting enough o2 exchange im a normal breath so your body asks for a deeper breath. You should try diaphragm breathing as much as possible as this helps you take deep breaths naturally. And deep breaths are more effective in oxagen/air exchange and much better for your lungs. I find i do the same a deep breath in every so often when i am unwell. If you cant sort it with diahram breathig ask to see your resp nurse for some advice.

Hi Candyred . 🌷😊

I'm sorry things have been so very tough. I know when I've been out of it, it certainly takes AGES for me to feel like me again. You are probably still pretty congested thus feeling like you need the big breaths. I would definitely bring this up with your doctor when you can, and remember, winter is a hideous time of year for us lung patients. The cold , dry air can make our airways even narrower and the heating can thicken our mucus making breathing more difficult.

I hope you feel better soon.

*HUGS*

Cas xx 🍀

Exercising your lung muscles?? I know I am supposed to build up that lung capacity.. I would see a physiotherapist..good luck xx
