I have severe copd emphysema and was wondering can I take any decongestants. I have started my rescue pack 3 days a go but my sinuses are really playing up know? Any help would be appreciated from you lovely fellow sufferers.

Hi, I suffer with bad sinuses periodically and tried sinutab a few years ago, which did help BUT when I read that prolonged or regular use makes it worse, I bought some Olbas oil to inhale with hot water and I put a few drops on my sheets, either side of my pillow to help at night BUT last year, I bought a neti-pot which is a sinus rinse, (dissolve unprocessed salt in boiling water, add cold and leave to cool.). This helps more and when I feel I’m getting congested, I use. (Can be used daily safely too.)

Easily purchased on the www and mine came with organic salt and a tiny measure, the pot looks like a small ‘genie’ lamp and they’ve been used for a long time. My friend recently had bad sinuses that gave her an upper respiritory infection and her doc said neti pots are very good.

Hope this helps.

I personally don't think there are any contraindications pertaining to Emphysema with taking decongestants if you think they will give you some relief.

best wishes for a stuffy free day..Ski's and Scruff's x

Have a chat with your local pharmacist. I was able to get some anti-histamines that didn't interfere with my COPD or my meds when I had a really bad cold in 2015, soon after diagnosis. I use BronchoStop and Vocal Zone lozenges for a mucousy cold at present, but only when I need to perform in public; the rest of the time I use a nasal rinse, Corsodyl daily mouthwash, and a salt pipe and salt lamp.

There is a sterile nasal spray made from sea salt, Sterimar I think it's called, a blue & white container available at most chemist shops, no prescription. Very good. My relatives in France drop sterile saline in to the babies & small children's nostrils on a daily basis to help with congestion.
