I have severe COPD. Is it normal not to cough. I never seem to cough or have mucus. Except a bit of mucus occasionally in the morning

Hi

You seem to have COPD emphysema with a slight bronchitis.

Similar to my self, little cough some mucus, which I call a nuisance, not another for a decent removal regime but enough to impact by breathing occasionally.

Yes it is quite normal we are all different and some will produce more mucus than others and some will cough alot while others hardly at all.

I have had two years cough free and for 6 months this year a dry, unproductive cough because of the cancer. Prior to being diagnosed with COPD and still smoking, I used to cough up pints of yuk.

I have severe emphysema stage 4 and like you I rarely cough when I do it's usually unproductive and the little mucus I do rarely produce is usually clear. I find I cough after I exert myself but that is also unproductive. When I do cough it usually leads to a bought of sneezing. Keep smiling

Haha Carole I thought I was the only person that this happened to. If I cough I usually end up having a sneezing fit. Barbs x

I have very little mucous but when I do, it's sticky and foul tasting. I think it's trapped too far into my airways to be coughed out.

Exercise helps me a lot with shifting the gunge

While in hospital they did do an x-ray and found mucus at bottom of my lungs. They put me on a course of tablets which they reassured me would move the mucus. They thought it was a n infection After 3 months of trying to swallow these big tablets and sitting with my little plastic bottle to put mucus in. Not lot happened so told Gp i was going to stop taking them and he agreed if not working no point in takng them. I am assuming the mucus is still there as i havent coughed anything up.

I get bouts of coughing just talking and my wife is forever telling me to SHUDUP!!

As has been said the sneeze when it comes helps me to fill my colostomy bag and can be painful.. BUT HEY! we are still breathing and with the ones that matter to us longer.. :-)

TOCHOO😵!!" Have a good day all.

Oh dear Tom, whatever ails you, it doesn't sound too good. At least you have your sense of humour and the ones that matter to you

I have severe emphysema and like you do not cough a lot. However when I do get a little mucus it takes for ever to come up, with little coughs.

I am the same have never been able to bring up mucus and find it hard to breathe 6 weeks ago they flushed my lungs out and took out a cup of mucas now it’s back again I know because when this happens my oxygen is 86-88

I usually only cough when I talk to much, but I very rarely bring anything up. I was told over 5 years ago that I have mild emphysema, haven't been told any different since then. I have however lost both upper lung lobes to lung cancer, so I think that has helped keep the emphysema from progressing.

On a side note: Poise light duty liners (the extra long ones) work for me.

Light duty! I like the idea of that

I have emphysema stage 4 and have never had a cough or much mucus most of m mucus comes from the nasal passages and is clear even when I have an infection I wish they would not lump all these conditions together as before I was diagnosed I kept seeing ads saying if you have a bad or hacking cough as a smoker see the doctor as I didn't I really thought I was ok when obviously when I eventually got diagnosed at stage 3 and rushed to hospital I was not really believe I may have been diagnosed earlier if not so reassured by those ads grrrrrrrr
