4th chest x-ray

Hi guys, I'm a little worried and my doctor is being really vague about things.

I had a terrible cough for months and coughed up some blood. I was given antibiotics that didn't work.

I then had a chest x-ray that showed pneumonia. I was given more antibiotics, and felt a bit better after 6 weeks.

I had a follow up x-ray that showed I still has some haziness/ shadow on my lung/heart boarder. Follow up x-ray 6 weeks later, showed I still have something there. I have another follow up in 6 weeks time. Anyone else had this sort of thing before?

I'm 26, ex smoker, healthy (ish)

Still feel really tired and have a bit of a cough.

Thank you.

A bout of pneumonia can leave you feeling quite weak and tired. Has your doctor suggested referring you to a specialist ? I think if I was in your place I'd be asking for that if the doctor can't explain things to you. I hope you're feeling much better soon. Sheila x

Hello Harwoodsbolero. I agree with mskpjb. You GP is obviously out of their depth and their treatment has not been satisfactory. Tell them that you want a referral to a good respiratory specialist. You can find a name by looking on the internet for the best in your area. Take the name to your GP and don’t take no for an answer. You will find as you get older that we have to be very pro active and quite vociferous in our own interests. I hope that you get it sorted out and feel better soon. Good luck.

Hi Harwood,

I had a similar experience. I had a terrible chest cold/bronchitis...3 different antibiotics later, I was still coughing. After 3 or 4 chest X-rays showing "effluent of pneumonia", I was sent to a specialist, who ordered a Ct-scan. My diagnosis was mild bronchiectasis. However, I was 68 at the time. I should think that you have youth on your side. Take care of yourself. My doctor told me that you need protein and sleep to heal. Please see that you get both. Best wishes.

Was the blood bright red? Was the blood a darker colour? Bright red blood like from a shaving nick is where the repeated coughing has burst some minor blood vessel in your throat.

If it is dark then it is probably from the lung.

Pneumonia take 6 to 10 weeks to recover from for a healthy person.

Kind regards, Rib
