Help to quit smoking

Can anyone recommend anything to assist in quitting smoking for someone with COPD?

My nan has been hospitalised again due to smoking having quit at Xmas but starting to have the odd one.

She has no option but to quit completely and without the use of a vape as that can trigger the COPD. Would love to know what’s worked for other people.

Thanks

Hi

There is support forum.

You mentioned vape, causing triggers. I now from personal experience that flavoured e-cigs can be a trigger.

Does your experience include nicotine only based e-cigs which are a alternative to tobacco products, which may help with smoking cessation.

Hi

I was a very heavy smoker 40/60 a day at the end .I had to give up otherwise I wouldn't be here today .I used the anti smoking drug Champix and after 7 days I've never had or wanted another cigarette .Hope this helps and good luck to your Nan .

PS.i am 70 years old and have given up for 14 years.

Love Barbara ❤️ .

Airwaves chewing gum. It has such a strong taste, it really helped to distract me from the cravings. It’s been 14 years now. Good luck.

I smoked about 2oz’s of tabbaco a month for 30yrs, 15 of those without filters.

NHS Choices helped me stop, quickly and without fuss. I can not recommend or commend them highly enough. Especially my coach, Mark.

Weekly assessment, carbon monoxide measurement with NHS trained staff.

Monitored use of nicotine patches and nicotine mouth spray... done and dusted in 6 weeks.

Six months later came the onset of COPD. Ironically I sometimes think I would like a ciggie, but hey, I like life more, especially after a good tasting meal plus I would be letting my coach, Mark down, and that is a no no.

Find Nan her ‘Mark’.

Hi, I was diagnosed with emphysema 2.5 years ago and had no choice but to give up immediately which I did without aid because it frightened me so much & the loss of breath & strength frightened me witless. There are aids but tell your Nan what it means if she doesn't give up.

I can no longer walk upstairs or anywhere more than 5 yards, I have no strength,or stamina. I am breathless most of the time, even washing up nearly kills me and I take nearly half an hour to get back to rest. Every small task that you take for granted is really an effort. Most things that she does now requires a plan of action and time frame. Eat sensibly good food not fast food or rubbish, take as much regular exercise as she can but not too much as it will bring on breathlessness, keep as fit as she can within reason. Any lung disease is incurrable, lungs don't get better the damage is done mainly by smoking, there is no going back.

I wish I'd listened years ago to my GP & nurses. I am now a wreck. Please don't let her have to go thro' what I've had endure and still do daily. This has stopped at least one forum reader from the habit on the spot it could do the same for your Nan. Life is changed so dramatically from which there is no recovery. I've ried avenues such as lung transpants, lung reduction, lung valves, lung coils and even stem cell treatments, all refused to treat me.

Don't let her put herself thro' that, it's expensive and too late. DO IT NOW.

Hi....I smoked an average of 40 a day for many years and only stopped when I realised I was coughing so much I sounded like my old Aunt bless her who had become so infirm she was bed ridden before she died. That was 17 years ago and I still miss her. However it was thanks to her that I looked to a hypnotist for help to stop smoking. Cost £60 and I session to stop a habit of 35 years. I really WANTED to stop so that must have helped. I haven't smoked since. Perhaps your Nan might benefit from hypnosis too. Worth a try maybe. Good luck. :))

Don’t mean to sound harsh but can’t think of anything more motivating than a death sentence.
