While undergoing pulmonary rehab is it wise to attempt tai chi?

Why not ask the physios running your PR course what they think about it? They might feel that it's best not to take on too much all at once, especially if your PR course is held twice a week.

I've never tried tai chi, but have been thinking about it. I'd be very interested in hearing what you think of it if you do decide to have a go, either now or after your PR.

I received quite a positive reaction from the pulmonary nurse but I now intend to leave tai chi until I have completed the rehab in three weeks time.

There are some very informative videos on YouTube re Tai chi.

I did go along to the class. I felt so inadequate and it was quite impossible to pursue. I am, sort of, sure that it is a beneficial ‘thing to do’, but it is probably more that one would be in company of similar ability people.

Thanks for coming back to tell us about this. What a shame you didn't feel comfortable in the class. I understand what you're saying though. It's always difficult joining a group who seem to know what they are doing, especially when you're not in the best of health anyway.

I wonder if you could find another class specifically designed for older or less well people? Or, as you mentioned YouTube videos - I know it's not the same having to go it alone, but it could be worth finding one aimed at beginners and seeing how you get on with that. Perhaps practising at home for a while would make you feel confident about going back to an organised class.

I don't know if any of these groups are anywhere near you - the nearest to me is nearly 2 hours drive away, so no good at all, but maybe you'll be luckier.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

As it is, I am extremely breathless much of the time. The least thing exacerbates it. ie. need to rest between garments when dressing or undressing. Brushing my hair is ‘ arduous ‘.

It’s a nuisance.

Loved my PR course but half way through it fell and broke my wrist ...at home.. now not really well enough to go back, felt so much better for it too x

Actually my wrist still doesn't feel like it is healed but hospital say it is so watch this space x

I can see no problem doing Tai Chi at the same time. I have severe emphysema and was still working at the same time as doing my PR course. My work is a 100 times more energetic than Tai Chi is and had no issues. It should not be a problem for you or your PR course as long as you feel up to doing it.

I’ve not yet done PR but practice Tai Chi and find it so gentle that I can’t imagine it’ll be too much in addition to PR. It certainly helps my breathing and is very relaxing too even if it takes a lot of concentration. Saying that, there is a routine called Shibashi which is more energetic - my tai chi teacher seems to like it as you use sticks or swords! If you’re thinking of joining a class, maybe have a chat with the teacher beforehand?

Hi, My PR course gave a choice actual exercise or tai chi. I did the tai chi and loved it

I'm on oxygen 24 hours now, and still struggling, but I still try to make myself "do". Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't but I'll be damned if I'm going to suffer "death by sofa".
