colds and mucus

how does 1 know the difference between just a cold or a new symptom coming on such as mucus and a cough just started recently

The difference really is a cold should only make you feel a little out of sorts, you should be able to carry on your days with a cold. Perhaps a little more tired and groggy but it shouldn't make you feel terrible. A cold shouldn't mean you have to spend days resting. If you feel rough for more than a couple of days it's likely to be something else.

I find a cold starts as a sore throat, and/or a heavy cold then ends with a cough..If it is just mucus and cough it is more likely to be an exacerbation or a chest infection depending on sputum colour, temperature..
