I am 83 and have C.O.P.D. Recently, I have noticed that my legs are getting weak and I fear falling over. I don't get about much; is this the reason? has anyone else experienced this? Albert.

Weak legs

Just getting use to Web site.would like a bit more info , Why you"ve not been getting around as much. Are you living in a care home.or do you have carers at home.
Hullo, Sapper. I think it is your lack of mobility that could well be the reason. There are all sorts of exercises, DVDs, and groups. Ring the surgery to get advice. Also look up DVDs for the elderly.
Use any walking aids that are available. All the best x
There is an old but very true saying that we 'use it or lose it'. The trouble is that we find it difficult to get about so we move less and then it makes it more difficult to get about. Do try to take some of the gentler exercises. Just a little to start with and try adding a bit more each week.
Mrsm is so right. I've had a chest infection for months, haven't been able to walk much, and feel as weak as a kitten. I'm trying to exercise my legs a bit with a device I bought on the internet, it's got pedals you press up & down, and you can reduce or increase the resistance. I think Argos sell something similar.
Thankyou everyone: and, Andy, I live at home with my dear wife of 63 years; she is well and cares for me. I think the 'use it, or lose it' advice is very good. I am awaiting a leg exerciser I have ordered on the internet, like Hanne, and I am hoping that this will help me to strengthen my legs. I have other annoying ailments as well as COPD. Kind thoughts, Albert.
Good luck with that. My COPD diagnosis was a wake up call in 2015. In February that year I was only walking 2500 steps a day. I've slowly built up over the years and now regularly do 10,000 steps a day - and feel so much better for it. So do what you can, and just keep doing a little more as you feel able. It will start to make a big difference.
Hi Ergendl,
Regarding your steps...I also have a Pedometer on most days especially for the Exercise classes and Gym. If I do 2.500 steps I'm Happy, so to do as many as you is fantastic. Well Done. I have Joined " Steps to the Moon" which starts in February and it is for BLF so rather than just count those steps, Now I feel I can put them to a Beneficial Fund. Thought you may be interested. Best Wishes . Carolina xxxxx

Hi Sapper21, I think a little and often will help even if you are doing chair exercises and just lifting up your legs it will help, its surprising how quickly you will come on. Good luck and dont give up. Irene x
Thankyou, Irene; I will persevere. X
