Good probiotics?

Wondered what's a really good probiotic, I'm going to have a fairly long course of abs to try help my chronic sinus infection before I have the surgery.

I always have an actimel every morning and activia yogurt during the day, but are there some really good ones out there as the only ones I know of are the ones in the supermarket.

Acidophilus from Holland and Barrett.

I use the Optibac range and notice a difference. There are different ones to suit whether it be Evetyday, Immunity, Antibiotics etc.

Another good thing about this company is that some of their profits are given to charity.

I get mine from Healthspan.

If I were you I'd take the Super 50 pro (that's 50 billion), £24 for 60 days. Next down is Super 20 pro (20 billion) @ £15 for 60 days.

Then Super 10 pro £13, for 60.

Pro 5 are £13 for 90 days but I'd only take the last one when I'm really well & not on abs.

They're really good quality, free post & buy on line. January sale code is: SPAN-FJA

I take Acidophilus from Solgar.

Good luck with the surgery x

Acidophilus tablets have helped me when taken while on antibiotics.

I discussed pro biotics with consultant and he says there’s no proof that they work. He said if you want to take something just take actimel as that’s the cheapest.

There is plenty of research, your consultant needs to do more research. Some doctors are very reluctant to recommend anything that isn't a synthetic pharmaceutical. It is well accepted by most healthcare professionals, that antibiotics upset the flora in our guts & that is extremely beneficial to rebalance. The proof will be in your improved health if you also follow a good diet. Actimel is not recommended by knowledgeable nutritionists. There are some good tips on probiotics in other replies. Well of course antibiotics knock over all your internal bugs, they are not aware which are the good ones. But big advertising budgets don't count as research. I had a lot of antibiotics for two months after an operation, my digestion was certainly not up to scratch. It soon got back to normal just by eating a normal mixed diet. I am sure some need pills but the vast majority don't.

Point taken. This is the case for otherwise healthy individuals but, a lot of people on here have had many courses of antibiotics & the gut does not get the chance to recover & needs help. Always a good healthy diet with food that has probiotic value is best, but may not be attainable for some. My doctor advised taking them alongside antibiotics, although this may sometimes only be necessary as a temporary measure. Equally, many health professionals now realise the value of probiotics for some people. Medical research has often been innacurate, or not carried out on some remedies, including our diverse range of plants, yet master herbalists have known about them. That is now changing, for instance; we now have more evidence than ever as more herbs which were thought to be 'old wives tales' remedies, have actually been found by research to be more effective than pharmaceuticals. These are often not recommended by orthodox medics even though research proves them effective. One of those reasons may be, because there is also an issue whether they will have to be prescribed by the NHS & render pharmaceutical products ineffective. Unfortunately medicine has become dominantly about pharmaceuticals rather than the best health remedies for people, but there is no real reason they cannot work side by side & be given proper credibility instead of being called 'complementary' when they obviously work & heal many people. Medicine should ethically be about results, after all, herbs are the basis idea of medicine, herbs have surreptitiously been used in medicine for a long time, but cannot be patented alone & therefore not profitable. All the best Clara

Michael Moseley recently had a TV program on the BBC which proved that all commercial pro-bio-tics did not survive in the gut. The only thing recommended was Kefir Milk and it's so easy to make and so cheap. You can buy a starter on eBay

for 99p.
