Hi, just to edit my previous post.... I was diagnosed with MODERATE COPD, not Mild.... & I seem to cough a lot with or without a cold.... sometimes the mucus is easy to shift & other time not.

There is a medication that can break up the mucus, making it easier to cough it up. During times this is a problem. On prescription only. Carbocisteine. And keep an eye on the colour of the mucus for infection
I have used a salt pipe in the past. They are not a miracle cure but it seems a lot of copd sufferers have benefited from them and others have not found that to be so. Personally I don't think I used it long enough to find out one way or the other! However, they are excellent for helping to break up phlegm and so clearing the chest a lot quicker especially after a cold ie as an expectorant - I have used one for that before and it does work well for that purpose
